Five day road death toll rises to 256 as mass return to Bangkok begins

The death toll in road accidents over the past five days has increased to 256 in 2,529 accidents, with 12 deaths in Bangkok, the most in any province, according to the Directorate Centre to Prevent and Reduce Road Accidents during the New Year festival.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand began the year with a ban on single-use plastic bags at major stores, continuing a campaign launched by the government and retailers towards a complete ban in 2021 to reduce waste and debris in the sea.

Thaksin reunites with daughter on New Year Eve

DTAC traffic surges 150 per cent on New Year’s Eve

Total Access Communications (DTAC) witnessed a record increase in traffic on New Year’s Eve, 150 per cent more than the previous year, thanks to the popularity of live video streaming via social media platforms like Facebook, which dominated mobile application usage over the New Year.

PHUKET: Phuket managed to survive New Year’s Eve, Day 5 of the “Seven Days of Danger” road-safety campaign for the New Year, with no deaths, Vice Governor Wongsakorn Nunchukan announced at the daily morning briefing of the campaign at Phuket Provincial Hall this morning (Jan 1).

PM Prayut concerned over drought situation

BANGKOK (NNT) - Drought was one of the recurring issues in Thailand last year. At present, the quantity of water in Ubol Ratana and other major reservoirs in the northeastern region is low. The Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, has expressed concern over the water situation and has instructed officials to assist people promptly in affected areas and encourage farmers to delay their planting.

Verdicts issued in 98 per cent of cases involving year-end traffic offences

Some 19,680 cases were brought before the criminal, provincial and district courts for violation of the Road Traffic Act BE 2522 during the New Year holidays (December 27-31) and verdicts were issued in 19,379 cases, a 98.47 per cent adjudication record.
