Greta Thunberg calls on world leaders to listen to young activists

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Greta Thunberg, who has inspired a new generation of activists to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos this year, urged world leaders to listen to young people on Tuesday.

“I’m not a person that can complain about not being heard,” she said, prompting laughter from the audience at a panel session titled “Forging a Sustainable Path Towards a Common Future” on the first day of the annual WEF meeting.

“The science and voice of young people is not the center of the conversation, but it needs to be.”

Several young activists have traveled to the Swiss ski resort of Davos this year, following in Thunberg’s footsteps.

Among the “climate heroes” being celebrated by the WEF are Irish teen scientist Fionn Ferreira, who created a solution for preventing micro plastics from reaching oceans.

They also include South African climate activist Ayakha Melithafa, 17, and Canadian Autum Peltier, who has been advocating for water conservation since she was 8 years old.

“It is about us and future generations and those who have been affected today,” Thunberg said. “We need to bring the science into the conversation.”

The scientific knowledge of average teenagers needs to be the center of the conversation?

What's the topic, 'What did you learn in Grade 9 today dear?'

Or actions that affect the future of the World and its people based on scientific knowledge?

She’s done a good job of getting climate on the agenda but this issue can only be resolved by Governments around the world, not young activists. We need to deal with climate change without going back to the Stone Age, and make sure that whatever actions we take don’t have negative unintended consequences. We need adults in the room, and Greta back in school. I was glad to see the back of Malala, then this one shows up!

Brilliant.. She doesn't write her own scripts. You can count any number of world leaders who don't do that either.

The point she is making here is a fair one. The only way to empower the next generation and get them doing the right things is to show them that their voices are listened to, and acknowledged.

Many of the older generation aren't maybe as motivated as Greta's generation to put policy (for a greater good) ahead of profits.

The world is going to ruin rapidly. People need to get a grasp on just how ghastly it'll be if nothing is changed soon.

What has become of the world leaders, I mean for F sake, our kids have to get centre stage to try and get some action done to change things, it's not about the kids providing solutions, it's the kids doing the parents job, saying oi, enough is enough, you have FDK the planet and your doing nothing to fix it or bring about change or solutions, you have been laughing at the scientist, while you and the big corporations line your pockets, only to leave our kids future waste lands all over the world. The air is polluted, just step outside, the oceans are full of plastic as big as an island, rain forests are being burnt quicker than they plant new trees, etc, etc, etc.

Good on yah Greta, Kudo's to you, as for the old TVF members who's time is almost up on this planet and don't have kids, get a grip, life isn't all about drinking Chang.

Glad this kids are active, because adults shorly aren't and haven't been and if these kids can bring about change through awareness and pressure to governments and the big corporates, well good on em.

PErhaps we should?

not that rapidly and not that soon, we are on schedule to dive into another

glacial period in 70.000 years, but as of now all parameters point to we are now

better positioned then ever before.

1] literacy higher then ever

2] life expectancy higher then ever

3] poverty lower then ever

4] death by natural disasters lower then ever

5] greening of the world, as we reintroduce co2 into the atmosphere,

we can expect more biomass then ever in history of man very soon

6] etc etc

cheer up, until next glacial plummet, we are doing better then ever,

i even suspect we will have the tech and economy to ward off that glacial period by then

As for people who believe in the special "wisdom" of teenagers, I think they are revealing something very unflattering about their own levels of intelligence and education.

I'd disagree with several of your assertions.

1) Being a schoolteacher, I can definitely say standards of literacy have been dropping in the UK over the past 20 years.

2) Life expectancy for humans had broadly been the same for the past 2,000 years (with a few dips for famine, disease and war).

3) Poverty appear to have been rising in the western world over the past ten years, and I can see no improvement in the future.

4) Lots of places on fire at the moment, what disasters are you thinking of?

5) You're probably right, China is making a big effort with planting forests.

But certainly our lives are much more entertaining and luxurious than those who lived their lives before the 1950s.

I think our civilisation has reached and passed a peak, and for the majority of people things will just get worse.

And the climate change supporters are only making things worse faster, with pointless fear mongering and blatant profiteering, and absolutely no sensible plans to combat those fears (be they real or imaginary).

Just look at the photo of their camp, how could anyone that litters like that be trusted to do anything to make the world better? They aren't the cure, they're the problem.

According to scientist that study the sun, there are

changes within the sun that alter earths climate,

they admit they don't know what is going on in

the sun, but suspect it may be a cyclical occurrence

which may account for ice ages etc.

Let Greta debate Trump. Will be fun to watch.

"I wonder, what will you tell your children was the reason to fail and leave them facing... climate chaos that you knowingly brought upon them? That it seemed so bad for the economy that we decided to resign the idea of securing future living conditions without even trying?

it wasnt until the event of chlorine based chemistry that life expectancy

crawled over 40 years, come to think of it, it wasnt until we could generate

electric power on large scale that all things took off.

humans living in utter poverty went from 90% in 1800 to 10% in our world with electric

Some people have skipped few classes of science education. As well as logic. As well as ability to understand longer time spans and entities than this very moment at this very location.

Those people are bound to become Republican senators. Why? Because their followers understand even less.

Here is a snowball for y'all.

She’s someone who talks more sense than many with more experience. Relies on reliable science and not quackery or screenshots of graphs from dubious sources.

I would add child morality into the equation, it has improved vastly, which completely screws up the true averages!

It's called "climate forcing" lots of white papers been published stating this is the true reason for climate change, though the main stream media prefers to ignore them as Greta sells more advertising and governments can't tax natural events - yet!

Child mortality is naturally a part of the equation, but not all.

You can always search the ages of people who were on top of their games and died of natural causes. They didn't live that long.

Being a teenager was having middle age crisis, if one was lucky enough to live until 40's.

I hate when scientists beautify or even change the data to fit their hypotheses. That is unacceptable and should cause renounce of the said scientists.

Unfortunately politics and money has a lot to do with the climate sciences.

Fortunately thought, there is enough mass, enough scientists, also independent ones, that cross misbehaviours and mistakes do tend to become scrutinised and corrected. That's the nature of sciences. Always doubt both your own and others conclusions.

Natural events are already taxed and has been for quite a long time. Fortifying sea breakers, creating redundant ways to transfer electricity in case of new Carrington event, making the infrastructure stronger, creating better building codes due earthquakes. These all are been prepared for and been paid by taxes.
