Greta Thunberg calls on world leaders to listen to young activists

And now it happens again , just 100 years after man's ' industrial revolution ' ... strange coincidence , not ?

Are you aware that it was hotter centuries before the industrial revolution?

  • Can't we just listen to the old activists that pull the strings and write the scripts for the young activists? As if Greta ever had an original thought in her life.

Sigh.  Yet another thread where grown male snowflakes incur brown stains in their trousers over the words of a teenage girl.

What stokes this fear?

She certainly does not make me fearful; infuriated perhaps, at her precociousness, & amazed how CC is being forced upon us.

Precisely why should we listen to this 'water warrior' & the Swedish savant - as she most probably sees herself?

They have no experience of real life & their pie in the sky ideals are laughable.

Still, never mind, their followers, their disciples have got a cause. Just like Greenham Common. My, how they've grown.

In March 2011, carbon dioxide levels were at 391 ppm, which is 0.0391 percent of the atmosphere. Of that tiny amount 97 percent is naturally produced carbon dioxide.

Somebody needs to tell grumpy Greta ????

There you go, your Google knowledge outshines the knowledge of the scientists.

There are many more reasons for man made climate change than overpopulation.

Of course there are, but overpopulation would be the main cause. More people driving more cars, flying, using electricity etc etc etc.

Back in the 50s when world population was a fraction of now, no one was fearful of "climate change".

"The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia."

The Earth's climate has changed throughout history. Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 11,700 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era — and of human civilization. Most of these climate changes are attributed to very small variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives.

Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal.

Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate.

The heat-trapping nature of carbon dioxide and other gases was demonstrated in the mid-19th century.2 Their ability to affect the transfer of infrared energy through the atmosphere is the scientific basis of many instruments flown by NASA. There is no question that increased levels of greenhouse gases must cause the Earth to warm in response.

Ice cores drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers show that the Earth’s climate responds to changes in greenhouse gas levels. Ancient evidence can also be found in tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and layers of sedimentary rocks. This ancient, or paleoclimate, evidence reveals that current warming is occurring roughly ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming.3

The evidence for rapid climate change is compelling:

Global Temperature Rise

  • The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 2.0 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century
The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere.4 Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with the five warmest years on record taking place since 2010. Not only was 2016 the warmest year on record, but eight of the 12 months that make up the year — from January through September, with the exception of June — were the warmest on record for those respective months. 5

Warming Oceans

  • The oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat, with the top 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) of ocean showing warming of more than 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969.

Shrinking Ice Sheets

  • The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass
The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass. Data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment show Greenland lost an average of 286 billion tons of ice per year between 1993 and 2016, while Antarctica lost about 127 billion tons of ice per year during the same time period. The rate of Antarctica ice mass loss has tripled in the last decade.7

Extreme Events

  • Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world — including in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alaska and Africa.
The number of record high temperature events in the United States has been increasing, while the number of record low temperature events has been decreasing, since 1950. The U.S. has also witnessed increasing numbers of intense rainfall events.12

Ocean Acidification

  • Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by about 30 percent
Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by about 30 percent.13,14 This increase is the result of humans emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and hence more being absorbed into the oceans. The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the upper layer of the oceans is increasing by about 2 billion tons per year.15,16

and the human population expanded at an unprecedented rate since the mid 20th century. If people want to blame humans for climate change, blame themselves for breeding too many people.

Do you honestly do research?

Climate change concerns and research started in the nineteen century when John Fourier uncovered the greenhouse effect in 1824, calculating that the planet would be much colder if it didn’t have an atmosphere. On 1859, John Tyndall discovered that certain gases block out infrared radiation and fluctuations in the concentration of these gases could promote climate change.

So, if you disagree, you must have something else in mind- do share, as I'm wondering what that is.

It's not up to me, but if I were dictator of the world I'd impose the Chinese solution on all countries. Unfortunately the Chinese stopped it just when it started to make a difference.

Anyway, given how overcrowded we are, something like the incurable coronavirus currently just arrived in the US from China may do the job. Everything in nature works to balance things. If mankind has become a problem, as it has, nature will come up with some way of eliminating the problem.

Solution to curbing people having children? I’ve never advocated this.

China’s population growth fell to its lowest level in decades recently.

How did she get to Davros walk there ?, stupid little girl ,bet she has all the latest modern toys ,nice smartphone ,massive colour tv at home all the mod cons ,well you silly little girl ,you should go back to my time when i was so excited to get a portable radio and a bus ride to the seaside .

It did work. Due to their cultural preference for boys, many, many girls were not raised, which means that in parts of China many, many men can't find a wife to breed with, which in about 20 years time will start to reduce population significantly. Population reduction is never going to happen quickly- it will take decades.

The corona virus may work more quickly.

No it didn’t work, it caused more problems than it solved, it did not help reduce climate change, do some research.

Nothing will reduce climate change as it is beyond the ability of humans to control.
