Boris Johnson will tell the EU he is prepared to accept post-Brexit border checks rather than allowing Britain to be a rule-taker in a major speech setting out his aims for a trade deal next week.

The Prime Minister will say sovereignty is more important than frictionless trade, defying warnings from Brussels that the UK must accept EU standards on goods if it wants the best possible deal.

Whitehall sources have told The Daily Telegraph that while Mr Johnson wants to avoid tariffs and quotas on cross-Channel trade, he will never cave in to demands for alignment on regulations, despite knowing “the consequences that flow from that”.

It will be interesting to see how he handles this one - the options open to him at present seem to be either breach the GFA or breach the very act upon which the uk was founded 300 years ago. If he selects either of these options, he is going to face a mountain of consequences.

His main target was always to become PM , at any cost at any ways …, so by marvelous manipulation he succeeded ….but he is on borrowed time …..he only counts on his joking twisting manipulations on a voters herd who does not see thru that ….or has no other options

If the UK wants to sell to other countries, it stands to reason that the standards of those countries are complied with.

EU standards apply to EU states only, (unless adopted by non EU states) no one else. 

The UK need not comply with EU standards while dealing with anyone else.

Most national standard have a reason. Different thought processes to achieve the same aim, US ready to cook chickens, for example, are banned in the EU, as EU chickens are banned in the US.

A lot of EU standards originated from the British Standard, but have gone their own way.

The UK uses a lot of international standards, American Standards, EU standards now and will do so after 31 Jan.

Pick your market, comply with the appropriate standards.

Totally right sir …. only pick your market out of E.U. choice ….. and count in that U.K. items does not come in by a third country as not reaching those E.U. standards so they would be refused

 

And before E.U. would probably give a general notice to world country's not accepting from third country's non E.U. standard products ..by a so  bypass

Practically UK will not have much choice. Around 40-50% of international trade will be the EU. On top of it, several other countries with trade relationships with EU already adopt or accept EU standards.

They forget that any serious country would not buy their U.K. non standard E.U. food or others , as they even can not sell it as a bypass to aligned E.U.  country's ….. call it as "blacklisted" in a certain way, but only consume it themselves

Obviously History isn't your strong point. I see the Dutch PM this week apologised for their involvement in the holocaust. The UK along with the US were thanked for their help in the liberation. Speaks volumes.
