Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit

The Ministry of Commerce will put on sales 10 million face masks at Bt2.50 to Bt5 each, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit on Thursday (February 6).

“Sales will start at 9 am on Saturday (February ???? at the multipurpose yard on the third floor of the ministry. The masks will then be distributed to Blue Flag stores nationwide,” he said.

“We expected to sell 2 million masks within the second week of February. Deliveries to Blue Flag stores will continue until the target is reached," he added.

He said the public is allowed to buy up to 10 pieces per person.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health's Permanent Secretary Dr Sukhum Kanchanapimai has warned people not to hoard face masks, saying that it would only stay effective for five years after the production date.

Prayoth Benyasut, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade (DIT), said face mask is a controlled product, subjected to a one-time purchase of no more than 10 pieces per person while export of the item is capped at 500 per shipment.

ok; but we dont have a crisis, right ?

Exactly what I was thinking. From, “we’ve got this 100% under control” to Anutin telling us that stopping travel from China won’t help in the fight against the virus, I’m very confused.

Maybe yes, maybe no - but at the prices advised it certainly curtails the gouging by many people looking after their interests above those who can't afford to be ripped-off - not that any Thai's would screw their fellow Thai's, now would they?

You're confused, that means the average Thai is truly confused and will have to follow along like a mob of sheep,  so nothing new.

You think the thai's are being hard done by .... try this for pricing  :  AUD399.99 or 163 baht each.

Shocked by the blatant price gouging, Cameron told A Current Affair: "I was expecting to pay about 40 or 50 bucks which I have in the past... but [the pharmacist] rung the bill up and it was almost $400."

The receipt showed the store owner bought his boxes of 50 at $11 a unit and then sold them at $200 - making a $189 profit on each sale.

This franchisor is just one of many, with another Sydney Chemist seen selling a box of 50 surgical masks for $399, and A Terry White Chemmart based in Adelaide asking customers for $700 for a box of 10 P2 masks.

And again another friend of the government who can enrich himself a little more!

I would guess these masks are the paper ones or similar.  Firstly, they provide almost zero protection for the wearer (designed to protect others from an infection the wearer may have) and secondly, they are single use masks and should be disposed of after use.

Just more propaganda.

How long can 10 million face masks last? Certainly that can't be more a few hours supply?

66 million people

N95 mask good for what? 8 hours?

It's a bit like them making 20 million masks a day in China. Not even a drop in the ocean.

And you'd think they'd have the sales price nailed down a bit more precisely? And 2.50 - 5.00 baht? What are these? Second-hand (face)?

On the plus side, these idiotic Blue Flag Stores (Thong Fah Pracharat - Old Junta "scheme") will finally get some business.

They want to make some extra money hey. I just red that one can buy a lot cheaper than what they sell them   ,   The price per pack of 10 pieces is Bt10, limited to one pack per person.

TOPS at Jomtien this morning 3 N95 masks in a foil pack 165 baht for 3. Bought 3 packs. A couple of weeks bought quite a few from 7/11 single packs for 35 baht each back then. Tops is owned by Central Group Thailand's third richest family. Go figure !

And 7/11's are owned by the richest family in Thailand. The Chearavanont family, according to Forbes.

Where are these clowns sourcing these masks.....surely they havn't been hoarding them!

They're selling only the paper drugstore type masks... not the N95 respirator type masks.

The masks they're selling are meant more to prevent sick people from coughing/sneezing out germs, and not so much to prevent healthy people from contracting the virus.

The World Heath Organization and many experts around the world have repeatedly stated a mask will do NO good for this Coronavirus. A N95 is only partially effective.

"Wearing surgical masks does not prevent a person from inhaling smaller airborne particles; they are not considered respiratory protection by the CDC. Surgical masks are also loose fitting, and when the wearer inhales, there is potential for particles to leak in or out of the sides."

"If it's a regular surgical face mask, the answer is "no," Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious-disease specialist at Vanderbilt University"

"A more specialized mask, known as an N95 respirator, can protect against the new coronavirus, also called 2019-nCoV. The respirator is thicker than a surgical mask, but Schaffner doesn't recommend it. That's because, in part, it's challenging to put these masks on and wear them for long periods of time, he said.

Specialists receive retraining annually on how to properly fit these respirators around the nose, cheeks and chin, ensuring that wearers don't breathe around the edges of the respirator.

When you do that, it turns out that the work of breathing, since you're going through a very thick material, is harder. You have to work to breathe in and out. It's a bit claustrophobic. It can get moist and hot in there," Schaffner said.

"I know that I can wear them when I need to for about a half-hour only, then I have to go to a safe area and take it off and breath."

That being said, this is just another profiteering scam for someone to put money in their pocket with the sale of 10,000,000 non-effective masks.
