Dear Minister Pipat, you really don't seem to notice, you're babbling about astronomical figures again and you're betting on the wrong horse again!

China is finished. By mid April the number of infected Chinese will far exceed the million. Unless there will be a miracle happening.

The WHO can also close down.

Do not underestimate the resilience of the Chinese .....

But he has said that in the second half of the year twice as many as usual will flood back to Thailand.

I guess he's got to say something so might as well make it double the usual figures!

Fine, the Minister if he wants that to happen should implement Martial Law and arrest all farangs and we all should be sent to immigration detention for deportation!  And all investment partnerships and trade from all Western countries withdrawn.  I hope this was just a one off vent of frustration other than a deep seated hatred to white western farang, but maybe there's some truth coming out how they really feel about us?  Plus the conflicting info - one wants us to wear masks, others saying "nothing to worry about"!

The masks are worthless and do nothing to stop the spread of a virus- they are of poor quality and the Western tourists know it.   He might want to hand out a card with tips on it to  avoid crowds; wash hands frequently and seek medical help immediately  if symptoms appear along with  a list of hospitals that will provide free medical  attention.

The Government might also inform the Immigration Department to smile and say 'Thanks for Visiting Thailand'  instead of 'Why you come to Thailand so often' and sneering.

The Chinese will not be back this year  due to the virus; lost time at work and lost wages.

The only thing that can save the tourism industry this year is to encourage Westerners to return by providing multiple entry no charge tourist Visas; lowering the prices of all hotels; allowing entertainment venues to stay open all night and taking the tax off things like wine; export goods and clothes to encourage shopping.

I stand corrected. A great quote from a giant man, with an oceanic mind and soul.

I reckon the Thai Government should just quietly remove restrictions on 'zero dollar' tourism.

That will bring the Chinese back quick smart. It's true that there'll be no benefit to the Thai economy (all the money going to Chinese interests), but the numbers will bounce back twice as good as before (proving that the Minister is right).

All style, no substance!

While I admire your optimism, Mr. Tourism Minister, and I plan to nominate you for membership in the Hope Springs Eternal Club, what's your Plan B?  While you think the Chinese will be back in record numbers later this year, it's just as likely that they won't.

We're well into February and the virus is no way near under control--with nobody knowing when it will be.  Many people, including Chinese, make their travel plans well in advance--I doubt many Chinese are booking any travel anywhere at this point for any time of the year.           The economy in China is likely to be bad for the rest of this year, with all the virus disruptions.  Some Chinese may face long layoffs until everything gets back to normal.  Instead of traveling, many may decide to stay home and save their money.  Some may have already used the money they put aside for travel to cope with expenses from the virus.  If they have lost a love one to the virus, they might not even be in the mood to go somewhere.

So, optimism aside, you really shouldn't be counting on the Chinese to save your bacon this year.  Instead, you should immediately be doing outreach to other countries--which you should have been doing all along.  I'm sure you're tired of hearing the 'eggs in one basket' litany but, seriously, not a good idea.  Get out there with Plan B and start diversifying the tourist demographic coming to Thailand.

THAILAND the worlds BEST tourist destination, where you can get free lung cancer and also now a free virus, that might require a few weeks in hospital while you are here.

Enjoy the great city and site's of Bangkok during the day (masks provided for free) and party at night with a good chance to catch either an STD or the coronavirus (for free).

Don’t worry about coughing up a bit of blood at night after a day out in the smog and should you get the virus, the cure is available at reasonable costs.

Please come tourists. You are always welcome! But please remember to wear a mask or we will send you away.

Welcome to Amazing Thailand! Love you long and short time Mak Mak!

Hotels usually run 85% full. They can't double their occupancy once the number of tourists doubles as there is no space.

Similar situation for the rest of the infrastructure.

Business can recoup a small portion but not everything

I am an ex pat living in Malaysia and used to ride my motorbike up to Thailand 5 or 6 times a year with a group of friends for between 5 to 14 days we always tour round and usually stay in nice hotels however Thai immigration say we are only allowed to cross the border twice per year without getting a visa from the Thai embassy this never used to be the case and applies to all expats and Singapore bikers this means spending a  day at the embassy then another trip to pick up your passport which effectively means two wasted days  because of this rule change hundreds of bikers are just giving up on Thailand Question - how is this good for tourism

There is a right hand and a left hand and inbetween is a brain that should coordinate their movements.... but it's asleep.

It does make you wonder how the selection committee for ministers works:

Are they put in a room, given a news report concerning a grave situation, then given fifteen seconds to announce a positive reponse?

15 seconds, come on- it would take 10 times that just to get their brain function moving.

27,000 per day Chinese visitor shortfall, giving 300,000,000,000 baht shortfall on the year.

Baht shortfall divided by Chinese tourist shortfall is 11.1 million baht.

Divide that by the year and each Chinese tourist would be expected to contribute around 30,400 baht per day to the economy. Hmm...per day? 30,400?
