U.S. seeks prison term of seven to nine years for Trump's longtime adviser Roger Stone

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Prosecutors asked a federal judge on Monday to sentence U.S. President Donald Trump's longtime adviser Roger Stone to between seven and nine years in prison, saying such a term would "accurately reflect the seriousness of his crimes and promote respect for the law."

 

Stone is due to face sentencing by U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson on Feb. 20, after a jury in November found the self-proclaimed “dirty trickster” guilty on seven counts of lying to Congress, obstruction and witness tampering.

 

The government said that under U.S. sentencing guidelines, he faces a range of seven years and three months to up to nine years, and told Jackson he "should be punished in accord" with those.

 

Stone is one of several people close to Trump who faced charges stemming from then-Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

 

During the trial, prosecutors pressed their case that Stone lied to lawmakers about his outreach to WikiLeaks - the website that disclosed many hacked Democratic emails ahead of the 2016 U.S. election that proved embarrassing to Trump’s Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton - to protect Trump from looking bad.

 

Stone, who has labeled himself an “agent provocateur” and famously has the face of former President Richard Nixon tattooed on his back, was charged with obstructing justice, witness tampering and lying to the U.S. House of Representatives' Intelligence Committee during its investigation into Russian election interference.

 

Stone's colorful trial featured references to the film “The Godfather Part II,” an impression of Senator Bernie Sanders by prosecution witness Randy Credico, and testimony by political heavyweights including former Trump campaign chief executive Steve Bannon and former Trump deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates.

 

Those witnesses said they believed Stone had inside information about when WikiLeaks might release more damaging emails about Clinton. In truth, he had no such information.

 

Stone was also accused of tampering with Credico's testimony, when Credico was summoned to testify before Congress and speak with the FBI. In emails and texts, Stone told Credico among other things: “Prepare to die,” “You’re a rat. A stoolie,” and “Stonewall it.”

Hey, I think you're on to something.  There hasn't been a change in politicians' style since the JFK hairdo, which is still the bi-partisan fashion 60 years later.

 

As for the judge, she's taken a lot of mess from this clown, and then was sort of overly sweet to him during the trial.  Look out, buddy-boy!

 

Where's the pros today?  Maybe concentrating on the primaries.

That would be the case if there were to be any cost, such as political, to the pardoning.  Since he now has a free ride, he will issue the pardons just to show his power, not out of any sense of obligation to his minions.

I'm curious to understand how you justify Trump's spitefulness and mockery of those in public. Everyone from dead veterans who were prisoners of war (fellow brothers of yours I would assume), parents of dead soldiers, and people with debilitating disease.

You guys will never get a reasonable or coherent answer from these Trump supporters, especially the hardcore ones.  The Trump party has pretty much become a cult.  Trump could decide to give Alaska to the Russians and his supporters will find a way to justify it.  But I do believe that the majority of Americans are smarter than that and will send Trump packing in November.

The accusations against Trump regarding Russia remain open and access to witnesses/evidence is still

being fought over in the courts.

Trump dare not pardon anyone associated with his and his family’s crimes.

 

Hd can’t risk a court hearing ruling against him. He’ll save his pardon power for himself and his children.

 

Also anyone pardoned loses their 5th Amendment rights, but can still be imprisoned for obstructing an inquiry.

 

Trump will leave Stone to rot in prison, he no longer has any use for him.

I agree with this, but I also see blind cultish behaviour in a core group of his opponents so it is not all one sided.

 

I truly want to know WalkingOrders' thinking on the matter is because from an outsider looking in (i'm neither military or christian) I would like to understand how he/she accepts Trump's open vindictiveness to fallen or captured servicepeople. That must really be painful for a current or ex vet. Likewise on the Christianity side.

 

I am on this earth to learn ultimately and without the perspective of others, how can I grow?
