‘Barracks businesses’ to be handed over to Treasury on Monday

Army chief General Apirat Kongsompong on Friday (February 14) placed Second Army Area Commander Lt General Thanya Kiatisan in charge of the military’s investigation into last Saturday’s murderous rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima by a sergeant-major.

He also appointed Maj General Rachit Arunrungsee, chief of the Army Welfare Department, to scrutinise all for-profit ventures in which the military is involved, including its own welfare programmes and businesses run in part or in whole by military units.

 

Chief of the Directorate of Personnel Lt General Ayuth Sriwiset was ordered to deal with officers found to have a stake in businesses run from the barracks.

 

Rachit has already informed Apirat that more than 40 businesses were operated out of barracks or on state land occupied by the Army, including hotels, boxing stadiums and golf courses.

 

Apirat said he would sign a formal agreement by which some of the land holdings and commercial businesses would be transferred to the Finance Ministry’s Treasury Department on Monday.

 

The same day, he said, he will report on progress made in his planned reforms and open a new call centre where low-ranked soldiers can lodge complaints about abuses by their superiors.

From our illustrious leader the PM who said five years ago he was going to reform the RTP, but turned out he was too scared of them and did nothing.

Lets' wait and see, however I'm not holding my breath.

 

What's not mentioned (so far) is reducing the outrageous unnecessary massive numbers of generals and other senior ranks which is derelict in terms of costs of salaries, allowances and 'extras'. 

 

If he thinks he can be successful at turfing retired officers out of army houses*, then why not tackle the massive 'oversupply' of officers?  This would of course mean reducing the numbers of officers who now get 'their turn' to hold senior ranks in 'the brotherhood', but in reality there's no benefit in such massive numbers for Thailand in any form of productivity or measurable contribution for the Thai populace.

 

* I wonder just how many such houses exist and by numbers whether such massive cost in the past had any real analysis in terms of justification on a philosophical or cost basis, other than sustaining and glorifying 'the brotherhood'.

It's quite simple: match the lovely words with lovely deeds and get people onside. Wow, they really do mean it this time!
