webfact
Why are tourists crazy over Thailand's 'elephant pants'? By AGENCY ‘Elephant pants’ can often be found throughout Thailand’s capital Bangkok in shops and markets. When in Thailand, you can spot a tourist from afar by the “elephant pants” they’re probably wearing. If you want to dress in a way that screams “I’m a foreign backpacker” at locals, there’s no better choice. Fashion is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to elephant-patterned trousers. Renato Moran from Peru bought his elephant pants during a visit to a royal palace in Thailand. The so-called elephant pants are rarely worn by local Thais, but these light and breezy trousers can be found in abundance in tourist areas such as along the pubs and hostels of Bangkok’s Khaosan road, once made famous by the 2000 film The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Ah, tourism crashes, numbers of visitors plummet, so what should a lazy journalist do...hmm. I know, make up a beyond nonsense story which both mocks visitors and promotes stereotypes. Bravo. 13 1 1

rkidlad
Yeap! These along with those fisherman's pants are truly awful. When I was a backpacker, it seemed that many people were in competition with each other to have clothes like a d***head. People were purposely dressing down in some weird and condescending cultural appropriation.

Popular Post Odysseus123
I like em.. But then again I like backpackers to as they are a refreshing change from boring conversations about pensions/health care/investments/visas and the ineluctable fact that the evil communist Chinese are taking over the whole world..and have been doing so since they kicked Chiang out in 1949.???? I had a great conversation with a young Russian guy about the battle of Borodino whilst standing in the queue at Savannakhet..it really brightened up my day. and..remember if it isn't the "Chicoms" it's the Russians or the Emperor penguins of Queen Adelaide island...

I'd put cargo shorts w/ a checked shirt & sandals into a similar category identifying a d***head, wouldn't you? Hence scammers and bent cops often target the wearers of such as easy, well-deserving marks. Now if a Thai wears that combo, would it be also be a weird and condescending cultural appropriation? ???? Actually most of the condescension in this thread will be directed towards the backpackers. We all feel so utterly superior to that group. Among others, of course. Me, I wouldn't wear the so-called elephant pants out, but they're handy to throw on at night as pajamas if the weather suddenly turns cool, for a quick trip to the mailbox, or sitting out on the balcony in cooler weather. I might also wear a Japanese yukata, however, which would really offend our posters' self-righteous sense of propriety.

I'm a tad concerned to learn that this classic and practical style has become an object of ridicule... On the subject of elephant pants, I welcomed them like a long lost friend when I first came to Asia in the mid 90's and they were all the rage. It's rather surprising to see their resurgence. 2

pacovl46
Well, they’re light, breezy, comfy and protect you from sunburn. Considering how hot, humid and sunny Thailand is, I’d say they’re perfect! I have a pair, too, but I wear them only around the house.
