Filipino boxers banned from Thailand

Boxers from the Philippines have been suspended from competing in Thailand after the death of super-flyweight Lito Sisnorio, according to Filipino media.

Sisnorio died in a Bangkok hospital on Saturday after sustaining severe head injuries during an undercard bout with former WBC flyweight champion Chatchai Sasakul, which Filipino boxing officials say took place without their approval.

Reports said the country's Games and Amusements Board (GAB) have decided to ban Filipino boxers from fighting in Thailand until the two countries can come to an official agreement about approving fighters for overseas bouts.

"This should have not happened," GAB chairman Eric is quoted in the Manila Bulletin. "Part of the blame should also fall on the Thais for allowing these fighters to fight even without approval from the GAB."

Sisnorio collapsed on his way to dinner hours after recovering from a fourth-round knockout in Friday's bout in Bangkok.

He underwent emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain, but never regained consciousness and died of heart failure 24 hours later. The 24-year-old had won just five of his 11 fights since turning professional in 2003.

Buhain said the GAB would not have approved the fight since Sisnorio had suffered three straight defeats.

Gemmil Contayoso, who had recently served as Sisnorio's manager, said he had no idea the former WBC youth champion had travelled to Thailand and said he would never have approved the fight with 37-year-old Chatchai, who normally fights in the flyweight division.

"That's a mismatch," Contayoso said. "The last time I saw him was in December. I am really saddened by his death."

The fight was organised by Petchyindee Boxing Promotions, who also manage 18-times WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wongjongkam, who is defending his title against Tomonobu Shimizu on Friday.

Sisnorio suffered a fourth round TKO by Pongsaklek in a tune-up bout organised by Petchyindee in January, a fight which Buhain said had also not been approved.

Sisnorio's body was in a Bangkok hospital morgue on Tuesday awaiting transfer to the Philippines. Sisnorio's family were reportedly unaware of his whereabouts or the death.

More Injustice To Filipino Boxers in Thailand

Last update: 09-22-2007

Ronnie Nathanielsz

In what must be considered a continuing travesty committed by the Games and Amusements Board headed by chairman Eric Buhain, three more Filipino boxers have been mauled in Mukdahan, Thailand with two of them losing by early knockouts.

Veteran Celso Danggod was the only one to last the distance, losing a unanimous twelve round unanimous decision to Duangpetch Saengmorakot in a Pan Asia Boxing Association super flyweight title fight. The 31 year old Danggod who reportedly had a record of 34-24 with 10 knockouts lost to the 27 year old Thai southpaw whose record was a far superior 35-1-1 with 15 knockouts.

Rene Banares whose record was listed by boxrec.com as 5-8-1 with 1 KO was knocked out in the second round by veteran world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin whose record was 71-9 with 47 knockouts.

The third Filipino boxer to be badly beaten was Joan De Guia who suffered a third round KO at the hands of Sod Lookmongyagtoy who has a string of 21 Filipino victims in a record of 32-2 with 13 knockouts. De Guia was reportedly 4-5-2 with 0 knockouts.

While boxrec.itself doesn’t guarantee the complete accuracy of its ring records the disparity is so great that questions continue to be asked as to why the GAB whose boxing division is headed by Dr. Nasser Cruz allows such blatant mis-matches especially after the public pronouncements by Buhain about stringent rules to prevent such mismatches especially in Thailand.

I suppose the appearance money is to good to refuse by lads that come from the sort of poverty that you see in places like Boulacan, Pampanga and the Eastern Vasayan Islands. These places also produce the majority of the bargirl population there.
