I went to renew my driving license on Thursday 1 April at DLT Hang Dong. Got there at 7.30am and they opened at 8am. Given queue number 1 and told to sit and wait until 9.30am when l would be called. The Thai's and foreigner's are dealt with separate. Was called at 9.15am with 2 other foreign nationals to do the routine eye test and brake reaction test after which the  3 of us were put in a room to watch a road safety video which lasted about 40 minutes, When the video finished we collected our papers from the Foreigner Desk next to counter 25 and paid for the license after which we had photo's taken and collected the new license. Was finished by 10.30am Very effortless and extremely helpful staff. You only need set of documents and not 2 as previously mentioned, These were as follows:

1) Copy of photo page of passport2

2) Copy of current visa page

3) Copy of current driving license

4) Actual driving license

5) Copy of yellow book or residence certificate

6) Medical certificate ( no older than 1 month)

7) 505 baht

Hope this helps

What time would you recommend to arrive, seeing that foreigners are dealt with separately from Thais?

Just for info, I renewed my 5 year car and bike licence 3 weeks ago.

Arrived at Hang Dong at 1.30pm.

At 1.40pm handed in paperwork.

At 2pm had the red, green and yellow test.

At 2.15pm I was in the classroom for the 45 min video.

At 3.15pm had photo taken and licences issued.

Not bad, under 2 hours!

Just the colour test? No other tests?

Correct. Did not do the footbrake thing or the depth of vision thing.

Wonder if that's normal on a renewal.

I need to change my 2 year to a 5 year one when I receive my residence certificate.

Hello, any new (May 2021) information on 5 year drivers license (I have 2yr). I am preparing for the task of renewing.

Received my 5 year this morning. Only test was a traffic light yellow', red and green and you call out the color as they lit-it-up.  Walked inside at 8ish and was out at after nine'ishy. Unbelievably fast. As I left people were outside under canopy.

Going back soon to change my picture, did not like how old I look and my hair was icky'ish, kidding of course'ish.

Was that renewing from a 2 year to a 5 or 5 year to a 5 year?  Is there any difference?

Can you renew your driving license anywhere or must it be in the amlhur of your residence?

For example, I live in CM, but could I renew in Lamphun if I had all the required documentation?

Thanks

Out of amphur is definately possible.  Not all amphurs have an office to do it, if fact most do not.

Was it necessary to book an appointment?

Very useful checklist thanks. They didn't require driving license copies with my application, the original licenses sufficed. However, I'm sure if I turned up without the copies, Murphy's Law they would have said I needed them!  TIT after all where inconsistent are abound.

Does anybody know if there is a penalty if I renew my motorbike road-tax late by a few days or weeks after it expired?

No penalty for me but I'm sure TV members would need to know the full details as maybe they aren't the same as my circumstances
