Five-year driver's license renewal experience at the main [Hang Dong Rd.] office.

I arrived at 9 AM at Monday, July 5th to find considerably more people than I had expected and was told to return the next day at 8 AM.

Showing up on time and after about a half hour of queuing and being herded around I reached the information desk on the upper floor. My documents and photocopies were found to be in order and duly clipped together with my old licenses... car and motorbike. Then I was asked if I had passed the online test after watching the one-hour road safety video.

No, I had never heard of it.

I was given a web address and told to return when I had a screenshot on my phone confirming that I had passed the test.

The crowded, disorganized, and stressful conditions that I had been dealing with put me in no mood for this.

After trying unsuccessfully to login, my phone battery was low and I left for home in a dreadful state of mind.

In familiar surroundings I finally accessed the video and after a tedious hour of watching fast-talking Thais and small English subtitles that made note taking almost impossible I did manage to pass the test.

Armed with the screenshot of my success I returned to the license bureau in the afternoon to find very few people and the remaining steps toward getting my licenses went well and were completed in a little over an hour and I was out of there and driving legally again.

   End of experience.

Does the online video and test apply to all applicants or is it related to age?

In other words, is it only for old people?

I don't know. I didn't hear or read anything to that effect.

The video is in both Thai and English but I found it a deplorable waste of time.

Beginning with a dialogue in Thai [with small English subtitles] between a middle-aged driving instructor and a young "Miss Manao" at the wheel, it could have come straight out of a Thai soap opera.

That was followed by short vids from the EU and one from Canada that were pure blood porn chosen for their shock value.

All in all, it was an hour that could have easily been better spent, but I'm glad that I eventually got my licenses in the end.

There was a staff member who tested positive there so they closed the building for 10 days I think for cleaning.

It's open again now, went on Friday to find out that you now need to do an online test to pass.

Plus medical certificate,  and cert of residency...none of this was needed 5 years ago.

Just had a video to watch and a colour blind test...

So much change!!

Anyone else taken the online test recently?

Just a heads up on obtaining residence certificate for driving licences.    I went there this morning to immigration and handed over my paperwork, including a SAE.   The lady told me to come back on 11 October between 0830-1130am  to collect my residence certificate and handed me a slip of paper with my new collection date.   I asked why she would not post it out on the new date with the provided SAE and she just handed me back the envelope and said "come back 11 October".        Apparently the DLT is closed according to her.

Thanks for the update.  It looks like government offices closures (WFH) will be extended.........which makes sense with increasing covid numbers.

I was told that the office will be closed until the end of September,  any driving licenses that expire  will be honored as legal till then ( this from a 17yr old sitting outside) I hope I don't have to test it?

Took my online "test" last week.

Right now it consisted if watching a 1 hour video and then answering 4 QUESTIONS  relating to that video.

Amazingly  I got a screen that said I had passed my test and to take a picture of that page.

This was not at  all what I was expecting.

I had spent 2 hours researching  info, (some of which I didn't know so no bad thing really).

So armed with a health certificate  and a proof of address one too it was off to the transport office.

I only had to do the colour blindness test.

The reaction test was not in use.

I was in the office there for about 1 hour by the time I had paid, had my picture taken, license printed

Unbelievable.

This system is only in place till the end of the year I believe so even if you have a license that is due to expire NEXT year try to get it done now as it will never be easier than this.

That is confusing now.  I just rang the DLT and they said that I had to book an online appointment before turning up.  Did you just turn up without an appointment,?

In October '20, I used my unexpired USA license to get a Thai car and motorcycle license.  I only needed one residence certificate.

Thank you. I will ask them today what they need. 3 x of the residence certificate sounds weird.

Not sure if anyone is interested.  But I renewed my driver's license recently.  Was a breeze!  I was a bit concerned as it had expired for nearly 365 days, but when my wife called the DMV they told that due to Covid as long as I renewed it before Day 365 it would be fine.  Not sure either of us believed them.  But, off we went with a new health certificate from Bangkok Hospital in hand.  Long story short ... no issues.  Long wait as the place was packed and of course not every window was open.  But, left with a new 5 year license.

Cost was 550 Baht.

Here is my experience on Monday 11 Oct.

I booked an online app last week for Thursday 14 October.

Booking online was not available for foreign passports .  The drop down box did not open.

And so I used my 13 digit Covid-19 number, that I obtained from online covid booking.

This will take you to various options to renew 1,2 or 5 year licence renewal.    It is all in Thai, so you may need your wife to translate the options.

Once it is all approved, print it out and take it to your local DLT on the app day.

My case was slightly different.

I had received the residence certificate on Monday.

But, I also had all relevant docs for my driving licence renewal in the car.

On my way home I had to pass the DLT office and popped in to verify my docs were all OK and that my 14 October appt would be honoured.

To my surprise, the female officer asked me if I would like to do it immediately.   Obviously I said yes.

So, 50 minutes later I was on my way home with a 5 year 11 month driving licence,  because mine had expired one month previously.

Documents I had prepared:

1.   Copy of passport page

2.  Copy of current visa extension plus copy of passport re-entry stamp with relevant copy of TM6.

3....Doctors certificate

4   Proof of residence certificate.

5   Copy of e learning online test.

6.  Original passport.

No reaction test, just 3 traffic lights to be tested on.

There were about 40/ 50 people in the room and not one other farang as far as I could see.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply.

1. Can you provide the link to book the appointment.

2. Does anyone have DLT Accepted experience using a substitute to Immigrations Certificate of Residence?

For example instead of COR taking a letter from a condo office &/or electricity receipts?

I do not think that anything other than a residence certificate is acceptable.  Except for of course a Tambien Bann with your name in it.

Here is the the item you need to download from playstore to book online appt for driving licence.

But please bear in mind that the drop down box to enter passport details does not work.

You will need a 13 digit id to use in the " id box option "

If you do not have one,  then try going along with the docs I mentioned and see if that gets you in.

Good luck

Today I walked into DLT (Hang Dong) @1:55pm and went straight to the marked window for License Renewal on 2nd floor  Asked if I could renew my expired driver licenses for car and motorcycle and said I had a certificate on my phone for having completed the online app.  She copied the number and  took my physical certificate, issued by my regular doctor, my residence certificate (used an agent, Immigration was a zoo and it was worth the 1,000 baht for two day service).  She had me make another set of copies including passport and visa.  One for each license.  Looked at an imitation traffic light on the wall as it flashed red, green, yellow.  Sent to the window to pay, and then to get my photo taken and watch the licenses print out. Total time; 30 minutes.  I complimented them and told them they should teach Immigration.  She laughed and said "yes!".
