I have return flights booked with Malaysian Airlines from Australia to Thailand departing 2nd April, returning 1st May with a short stopover in KL (staying within the airport), both directions.

 

I do not fear contracting Covid19, my families health is robust.

 

My concerns, and this post stem from The Singapore governments recent decision to ban airport transfers through Changi International Airport of travellers from declared high risk countries.

 

At worst, I contemplate the Malaysian government taking similar measures if Thailand in seven weeks time is declared a high risk country. This scenario is possible.

 

At worst, my family and I could become stranded in Thailand in dire circumstances.

 

 

So, would you take your family of four to Thailand in the coming weeks, given the above scenario?

No, mainly because IMO the Thai authorities are fudging the real figures.

It beggars belief Thai infection figures match those of Australia, when Australia has instituted travel bans while Thailand still has the welcome mat out for Chinese tourists. Australians call that coming the raw prawn.

We are a family of 6, the youngest 5, the eldest 15 and have cancelled all holidays now with the school summer holidays here.

 

This was not taken lightly, we did our due diligence and researched the c-r-a-p out of this virus, in fact we just returned from the doctors, as our two youngest daughters 5 and 10 have had a lingering cough, nothing serious, a little green phlegm but we thought it time to go to the docs for antibiotics as they can't shake it, no temperatures or that, but it does disturb their sleep, anyway, long of the short, the doctor is the head the pediatrics section of a well known local government hospital here, she checked the girls out and prescribed antibiotics and told the girls to wash their hands thoroughly and to cough into their arms at elbows length, then she turned to me and my wife and said, don't go on any holidays, don't go shopping, and stay at home, grabbing my wife's arm as she said it.

 

Prior to the doctor advising us of the above, we were paranoid enough to stock up on food and necessities, on top of with all that is going around with the "low" reported numbers in Thailand vs the rest, suffice to say everyone we talk to, Thai's and farangs also have doubts that the numbers being reported from the government is wrong, misleading etc etc, however I cannot prove it, but believe what I want to believe and that is, the numbers are too low.

 

You have asked what I would do and that is, stay where you are until the world gets a grip on this, regardless how robust your families health is, and if you haven't got private health insurance, get some asap, especially if you decide to go on your holiday.

Thanks for your replies, I do believe the situation in Thailand will disclose itself at some point. Songkarn will see a lot of movement from the cities to the provinces and spread Covid 19 to the elderly. 

 

Any disparity from the mortality rate against the rate of infection will make the situation self evident.

 

And no, I do not wear a tinfoil hat.

While the risk of contracting Covid19 is debatable airports and planes are places to avoid right now.

Also, the risk of being stranded here is a possibility, airlines are cancelling flights and restrictions are happening quickly.

Push your flights forward to September ( for example ), don’t put your family in any unnecessary danger or a difficult situation if a flight ban happens.

Think coming here and catching flu be bad idea. You would be  returning to Australia going into winter and be hard to shake off the flu.

Australia doesn't have magical cocktail of drugs either.

There is no drama in realizing the dangerous possibilities of the virus. Something that you seem to be totally oblivious to. Not that I had expected anything else from you, though.

He is not scared. No, but maybe he should be instructed to have respect for it.

You do not know if he is safer in Thailand than in Australia or any other country. That is because you do not know who is giving the right numbers and who is hiding the real numbers. You just chose to believe all that your government provide you with. Has that ever been a good way to go in Thailand, disregarding what government is in place?

If you chose to believe it´s only one death in Thailand. Yeah, what can I say? Still up to what you believe, but you do not know for sure.

It´s also very morbid and totally out of place to welcome and recommend a person to bring his family and travel to any country at present time.

At last just a little fact on the side. In a thread when the coronavirus was new, you posted that nobody is going to die of coronavirus in Thailand. Sure! Do you remember that? Even if you are going to hold on to that it is only one, that still means that you were wrong. Bearing that in mind, maybe all readers should be recommended to not trust your posts.

You think your government is telling you the true rate of COVID-19 infections here? You think still letting Chinese tourists into Thailand willy-nilly is safer than Australia, where travel bans are in place?

It's a bit like road deaths in Thailand, if you die in hospital after a road accident it is not counted in the road toll statistics.

On the basis of a statistically insignificant number ( 1 vs 3 deaths ) you are saying Thailand is safer than Australia. The OP is asking about the level of risk, not the death rate.

Australia is banning countries deemed at high risk, or instituting quarantines on incoming passengers. What is Thailand doing, apart from trying to save the tourist industry?

Thailand is one of the least affected countries by coronavirus so far. Looking at SARS Thailand did everything right and had a grand total of 2 deaths. Yes, Covid19 is more contagious even though mortality is lower, yes a Covid19 breakout could always happen anywhere in the world, including Thailand, but the odds would be small this happens during your holiday window.

 

It is also extremely unlikely that all travel in and out of Thailand will come to a halt.

 

If you were stranded in Thailand it certainly would not be in dire circumstances, there are world class resorts here, superb malls, everything from French bread to Aussie corn fed beef and all in between.

 

But I think that is extremely unlikely.

 

I'm in Thailand now and it's actually a very good time to come, less crowded and more pleasant as all the scared people stay away.

 

Personally I would not travel now but if you did I would think you'll be fine.

Possible scenarios are you come as planned and return home no problems.

 

You have to rebook because Malaysian Airlines cancel all flights to Thailand and possibly Australia. Australia may sever connections to Malaysia? 

 

You arrive in Thailand fine but the return flights are suspended whilst you are here.

 

And the one i think may be most likely you fly over enjoy the the trip but on return to Australia you have to do a 14 day quarantine.

 

The wisest thing if travelling with a family would be to forget about this trip and rebook it into the future. If you were a lone traveller you could roll the dice and do the trip.

I will monitor the situation carefully and make a decision this coming weekend. I will be looking out for an increase in reported infections and deaths in Thailand and the conduct of governments and airlines to determine our ability to return to Australia un-hindered.

 

I understand the value in Thailand demonstrating peak infections and avoiding a high risk declaration.

I'd be erring on the cautious side OP as you have a family to consider.

 

On the other hand personally, I have a trip Thai/UK return (direct BKK/LHR) in May June and my main concern is that on my return to Thailand they don't let me back in due to some paranoid, knee-jerk, over-reaction to whatever is happening at the time.

 

I will wait it out for developments, or if British AIrways write to me recommending a change.
