Police and rescue services went to a Mini Mart in the area of Khong market in the province of Nakhon Ratchasima after reports that a man had been shot.

The mayor of the district was found in a pool of blood in bed in a bedroom on the second floor. A .380 gun was on the floor.

Adul, 58, was rushed to hospital but died there from a bullet wound that entered by the chin and got embedded in the nape of the neck.

Sanook said that the mayor had been playing with the gun with a two and a half year old grandchild.

Khong police chief Pol Col Phichet Jantharat said that relatives told investigators that the mayor had gone to his room alone after dinner to shower and perform religious rituals as was his normal habit.

Thirty minutes later they heard a shot and rushed to the room to find him shot in the head and a gun lying on the floor.

Police are examining gun residue to get to the truth of what happened.

Yeah, I always remember those two British soldiers, beaten up and shot with their own gun - a gun is a dangerous thing to have around. Whether it's more dangerous to you, and your loved ones, or your opponents is a moot point.

I remember reading a while back that 50% of Americans who are shot, are shot with their own gun, mostly during robberies/burglaries.

if they mean a 380 semiautomatic handgun it is possible there was still a round in the chamber after removing the clip.

but who knows.

The mayor should surely be regarded as a pillar of the community and somewhat more intelligent than average. Why on earth would he need a gun let alone play with it!  Why anyone needs to possess a gun of any description is beyond me!

The Mayor of our area is as thick as two short planks and only interested in people giving him extra Wai's and screwing money out of any Village projects that he can; they see the title as a chance to make money and that's all.

Reads like he topped himself.....????

Not to me. It read like the kid shot him and the family were trying not to mention that.

Or possibly he was larking about to amuse the kid...
