An ideal solution for replying to people who love to comment, but hate to read.  You are so far away from the thesis here ... why would I bother, when "READ THE ORIGINAL POSTING' is the best cure for your problem.

I read it. I find your obsession with breathing zones weird and irrelevant. A public effort to suppress the speed of the spread of this virus should be the focus.

Going to guess you posted this without reading the original post.  Even the heading is a massive clue.  Try harder please.

Oh yes there is.

East is east and west and west and here in Asia people here won't assume you are sick if you're wearing a mask.

Let's see, there are two study groups of 100 people.  Each group is held in a confined area for 20 minutes.  One group wears masks and avoids breathing on their neighbor, and the other (no mask) group stands toe to toe the whole time.  Hmmm ... care to guess who gets sick?  I think one of the main things you missed here is I was not saying this is a cure, it is a common sense and respectful way to treat others, especially Thai People who are really getting fed up with Foreigner BS right now.

You made up an imaginary "study" to support your argument. That's chutzpah.

The funny thing is that I'm coming around to your  POV that people without symptoms should wear masks but that's not good enough for you. But for a different reason than yours. But you're not happy unless people agree with YOUR reasons why people should wear masks.

You don’t get it. No one said that anyone assumes you are sick if you wear a mask. But if you are healthy and wear a mask (except healthcare staff) you are just stupid.

If you want to know why Thais are losing patience with Foreigners now, the mindset is "Either you are WITH us ... or AGAINST us."

Garbage.  Who, apart from you, said that "Thais are losing patience with Foreigners now"?   Half the Thais I've seen in the past few days don't wear masks.

Please quote the source of this study, with statistics showing the actual positive relationship between the independent variable (wearing of masks) and the dependent variable (the infection rates for those wearing the masks). Or are you just making this stuff up? Never mind, that was a rhetorical question.

I guess my Thai wife and her friends might be a good start.  And the wives of lots of my friends.  And our condo manager, and her friends, and ... I can do this all day.  Not sure where you live or what you are referring to .. this thread is about high density close contact areas like BTS.  Go to Siam BTS Station 8:00 AM ... and have a look around.  How about you give me 10 baht for every Thai in a mask, and I give you 20 for every Thai without a mask? (Going to guess you don't live in BKK)

I will not split hairs with you about what "irony" means.  I will offer you a moment of silence to morn the rather lonely and sad life a person must have to not know that people smile with their eyes, with body language, with attitude and behavior.  I hope someday, someone looks at you like this.

so true, 20 years ago i spent time in yemen where all females over the age of 13/14yers wore burkas with only their eyes showing, believe me you'd be amazed how much can be communicated with just the eyes

I got from the hardware store because it is...pretty air tight.  You see, I wear it to be polite and not breath on people

If you don't have the infection, exactly what is it about wearing a mask that makes you "so polite"?   Will you continue to use the mask after the pandemic has eased and you still haven't got the virus just to show Thai people how polite and respectful you are towards them by continuing to not breathe on them?   If you don't plan on continuing your respect and politeness battle then your OP and agenda makes zero sense.

By the way, good luck with breathing through your "pretty airtight mask" or is it not as "air tight" as you'd like us to think it is?

Duh?  It is polite, because the people around me on BTS say so.  And yes, "back in the day" on the few occasions when I was on BTS at rush hours, like all the Thai People around me, I too wore a mask.  Now it is standard operating procedure on the Skytrain System for me. The thing about the air-tightness of the mask is about the fact the paper-masks just blow steamy air onto my glasses, made doubly worse in the "meat locker cold" Skytrain system.  It is heavily made, will last a while, and ... for the last time ... I wear it when in crowded areas ... to be polite.

Did you actually read this posting?  It basically says, "in confined areas with lots of people, it is polite to wear a mask."

I live in a city of nearly 2 million people and I have never seen anybody wearing a mask

apart from some Asian tourists who are used to them from the country they come from.

OMG.  This is your first exposure to a hypothetical comparison?  Oh, darling, let's keep going, I promise, i'll be gentle.  Thank you for this reply because my friends are going to love this story!  OMG. PERFECTION! 555  (NOTE:  Did you miss the part that asks " Hmmm ... care to guess who gets sick? GUESS is the key word here.

Okay, here's a hypothetical here. A <deleted> comes onto an online forum and lays out a nonsensical post, with no basis in facts or science but claims it's something that everyone would should follow. If not, then they are abrogating some sort of imagined social construct, totally made up this hypothetical poster's mind.

Oh, and I'm not here to GUESS about anything. If I want valuable information on how to protect myself from this pandemic, I'll follow the advice of epidemiologists and MDs who specialize in epidemics and pandemics. NOT some online poster who is GUESSING about something.

Here's a great article from an infectious disease specialist at the Univ. of Toronto. https://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/opinion/commentary/mass-panic-could-be-worse-than-the-coronavirus-itself-says/article_a661c09d-84bd-5521-b782-6b1835b64aec.html

I have nothing agaist a mask, however I have never owned one and would have no idea where to get one.

I live in rural Khampaeng Phet and the pharmacy in the big village 6km away has masks at 3 for 100 baht, alcohol sanitiser and should you need them toilet rolls are also available in the village.

Perhaps it is your location that is the problem?

Yes there are, but perhaps not in BKK.

I see. So if we falangs go around wearing masks we are going to get smiles from Thais. Do you see the irony in that statement?

We may do because half the Thai population (and the foreigners) doesn't bother with masks!

How about this? A humorless troll goes on line and (hopefully) pretends he does not understand the premise of a hypothetical test where two test groups share identical spaces for identical time periods, one group wears masks, and the other does not, breathing freely upon their neighbors.  Might a person with an IQ above say ... 80, be able to venture a guess which group is most likely to pass germs more easily?  The thing is, the original thesis is actually about public perception and the roles of Foreigners in Thailand.  The basic idea is, "Stop being a self righteous ass hat, and wear a mask because the 98% of Thai People on Skytrain would appreciate it."  Pretty basic really.  Sort of like "Why you don't fart in elevators.  (OK, I know you probably do that .. but normal people don't)

Only 2 million people?  Are you joking? Where do you live?  The Skytrain BTS System has more people than that on it during rush hour!  Wow ... I just realized, you don't even live in Thailand!

If you know you don't have covid19 absolutely no reason to wear a mask.

Plus, BBC and doctors say it's unnecessary if you're healthy.

Yes, we have made the egregious error not living in the middle of nowhere.

You have made the right choice.
