Five traders, who inflated the prices of face masks, were sentenced by the Criminal Court to time in prison.

The court ruled that the five defendants, namely Ms. Dao Trithewee, Mr. Pongpan Somsut, Ms. Namfon Oeisiri, Ms. Umaporn Munkong and Ms. Nup-isara Khorsook, were opportunists who had preyed on people in distress.

Ms. Umaporn, who sold 4,000 face masks, was sentenced to three years, commuted to one year and six months. Ms. Dao, who sold 750 masks, was sentenced to two years, commuted to one year. Namfon, Pongpan and Nup-isara were given six months each.

Two other traders, Ms. Nisara Maharuankwan and Mrs. Tassaporn Chanthanapitarn, were jailed for six months each, suspended for two years, and fined 25,000 baht each.

Anyone trying to profit out of this situation deserves nothing less ..

And they should be banged up without any bog-roll ..

Really good idea (not) jailing people in a close contact environment, with no sanitation , treatments, or ability to practice social distancing. Guaranteed to spread it within the centre and the community via custodial officers getting infected

What about the government ministers who were profitering/ hoarding/ exporting masks?

They're never guilty of anything, including doing an honest day's work.

If they were caught selling toilet rolls to make a quick buck, would that be seen as profiterole-ing?

Let's wait how much they charge for an extension of stay because of the virus when the travel ban comes into effect/canceled flights back home.

(profit out of this situation)

Why it's basic supply and demand.

I don't see anybody from the govt arresting the folks from a certain hospital charging 25,000 for a wu flu test.

Have you seen how prices change in the UK when there is half term or summer holidays?

The hospital I think you are referring to charged me 49,000 baht for a med that normally sells for 2000 baht but I guess that is OK.

Wife went into a big pharmacy in Chiang Mai yesterday. She was wearing the exact same model of mask as the shop had on display at 139 baht each. She told him that she paid 20 baht for hers two month's ago. Pharmacist just shrugged.

Yep, supply and demand.

The government needs to be seen doing something to solver the mask shortage so they pick on small time traders easy targets but the big time smugglers go scott free.
This solves nothing there aren't any masks.
And please those Trolls who claim they just bought 50 name your source!

I understand but it's the govt who have been hoarding and selling to the Chinese.

The people caught were the low hanging fruit, probably had a few dozen to make a few extra shekels

Ms. Umaporn, who sold 4,000 face masks, was sentenced to three years, commuted to one year and six months. Ms. Dao, who sold 750 masks

Hardly a few dozen.

This is why supply demand argument is invalid.

The government needs to get the masks to the people. They can begin by distributing at BTS MRT stations.

Where are the masks promised to be introduced into circulation?!

And quietly let them all out in a month on the basis they keep quiet - job done.

If we are to believe all the "hysteria" on here, they wont be "let" out in a month ????

If? - prisons should be a certain death sentence ????
