Aranyaprathet: Huge crowds as Cambodians head home ahead of border closure today

77kaoded reported that there were huge lines of people and vehicles of all descriptions as Cambodians sought to cross the border at Ban Klong Luek, Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo yesterday afternoon.

The border is shut from today.

The media reported great traffic jams as people and all the possessions they could carry were being taken to the neighboring country via the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge.

The departure of the migrant workers comes as the coronavirus/Covid-19 crisis in Thailand intensifies.

Many businesses in bangkok and other provinces employing Cambodians have been shut down for the next few weeks.

The g/f went from Sa Kaeo to Lop Buri with her family to visit relatives. Now they are (supposedly) stuck there as they've been (supposedly) told that they can't travel back to Aranyaprathet !

Neighbours across the street from me are from the same area as the g/f and they've been told they can't return either (they were planning on going back for Songkran but I guess they can't even go back now).

I haven't seen anything on the English language news about Thai provinces shutting down traffic from other provinces - but I may have missed it somewhere.

Not sure if it has anything to do with the shut-down of Bangkok, we are one of the 5 bordering provinces, a construction site of shops/condos near to my home has been teaming with a mix of Cambodians & Myanmarese for the last year, From Monday I counted 3 people at the site.

Hundreds of Cambodians stranded at closed checkpoint

By The Nation

Around 400-500 Cambodian workers are stranded at the Aranyaprathet immigration checkpoint in Sakaew province after the checkpoint was closed today (March 23). It is expected to reopen only on April 14.

The immigrant workers who were not informed of the situation are now waiting aimlessly at the border. All the while their numbers are increasing.

Thai officials are collaborating with Cambodian immigration officers to decide whether or not they should allow the workers to enter Cambodia.

One of the workers said her employer ordered her to take leave for 14 days and she decided to return to her homeland, but she just realised the border has been closed. She begged officials to let all the workers pass because they had nowhere else to go.

Amazing! The country should be refused as a nation, for not accepting and taking care of their own. Just to open up, screen and check as well as transport them to isolation for 14-21 days. Shameful behaviour against it´s own citizens.

These massive movement of people, first Thais back to the village, second this  movemnt of Cambodians & third Laos folks all heading home will spell doom for Thailand & its surrounding countries, maybe until Christmas,

The only way to fight this virus is limit carriers movement.

Can they not understand this or just do not want to listen to the specialists?

Have you thought perhaps your g/f would have been more  sensible to have not traveled at all ?

When they left there wasn't any restrictions on travelling between provinces (i.e. from Sa Kaeo to Lop Buri). The only closures I heard about was in the article in the OP, but that was a border closing, not a provincial closing.
And even then, there are other articles just yesterday about the huge number of people leaving Bangkok, with no mention of not being allowed to travel to their home provinces. The only mention was, again, about the closure of the border with Cambodia.

You did not get the facts correctly: Thailand closed the Aranyaprathet immigration checkpoint, not Cambodia. Thailand immigration does not process anymore anyone who wants to exit Thailand there.

besides 7-11, it's super easy for me to stay 2 meters from everyone.  At that border, 2 meters seems impossible.

Right now, we have ONE JOB as HUMANS......stay 2 meters away from everyone.  (if you have a gf, god will grant that exception...lol).

let me think...

TWO2Live

Two meters to live

OMG, I'm making t-shirts.  i'll be rich!!!

Cambodians, Burmese and Laotian go back home, and now who's gonna hold up Bangkok?

Perhaps now some arrogant Thais will understand the importance of these workers?
