Our family eats a lot of eggs. We easily go through 8-10 a day.  This morning, some idiot doctor makes a statement that coronavirus can not penetrate the wax coating on egg shells. Guess what happened?  Totally predictable. Panic buying of eggs. By early afternoon there was not an egg to be found. My wife and spent 2 hours driving around to every market trying to buy eggs. At 1 of the outdoor markets, 1 place still had eggs but there was a long queue. By the time my wife got to the front, all that was left was #5 eggs. I didn't even know eggs went that small. And the lady wanted 120 baht for 30 eggs barely bigger than my thumb.

We passed on that and decided to try our luck elsewhere. We finally got lucky, but I can tell you it was crazy. We litterally had to fight our way in to get some (my farang bulk helped in that process), and we were basically given no choice. "Mixed eggs. 100 baht for a 30 pack. Tell me how many you want or get out of the way."  We bought 4 of them and considered ourselves lucky.  Having asked around we already knew that nobody was expecting egg deliveries tomorrow.

So if you don't have eggs right now, don't expect to buy any for at least the next few days. No idea how long this will take to resolve itself.

Fighting for eggs, then buy 120, sounds like panic buying.

No. Not panic. Normal grocery shopping. We buy 120 eggs every 2 weeks. We usually get the 4 pack from Makro. Every Makro was sold out today, as well as everywhere else we checked.

The difference today was just the part that required we nearly engage in fisticuffs in order to buy it.  This kind of thing is exactly what should not be happening.  I was very happy that we managed to find it anywhere.

Maybe just maybe the doctor is not an idiot and owns a large stake in the chicken farms that sell the eggs to the brokers who sell them to the stores and then the people.  If I could be half that smart I could be rich.  Just another way to win during hard times and make a buck.....

With all due respect, but that appears to be the sweets and biscuits aisle - not exactly the first aisle to be hit by panic buyers. The dried/instant noodle and bottled water aisles at my local Big C did not look anything like that yesterday evening. Maybe I just got there before staff could restock, but the shelves were pretty empty.

The noodle aisle was the same, couldn't say about the bottled water because I don't buy it.

even though we're not rural in Rayong, free range eggs are easy to come by and the CP eggs don't seem to have been all bought.

Ah, that probably explains why in the Big C today the egg shelf has been totally empty...

Others foods still plenty available.

I would reckon eggs are restocked tomorrow as well.

First it was toilet paper, then water, rice, instant noodles. What's next? ????

Pointless to overstock eggs, can't keep them that long in the first place. If people had brains they went after canned tuna and foods,
almost nobody does, thus I have more than enough by now. Just adding some to our stock day by day now.

Depends on whether one has a refrigerator. Eggs will keep for at least a month at 4 degrees C.

Ban Phe has been hit today by the big egg sellout, the supermarket shelves are empty but still available in the momma poppa shops in the village.
