The southern border province of Satun is preparing quarantine facilities for about 1,000 Thais set to arrive back from Malaysia when the border checkpoint opens on April 16.

Muang Satun District Sheriff, Kongsakul Chantarat, said on Thursday (April 9) that around 20 small field hospitals had been set up to house many of the returnees during the mandatory quarantine period.

The local administration office has also approved the use of 21 schools, now shut under the lockdown measure, for 14-day state quarantine of an expected 800 or more returnees.

Those seeking to return on April 16 must first register with the Thai Embassy in Malaysia and get a medical certificate showing they are healthy. The returnees will travel in groups escorted by embassy officials, before being led to the state quarantine facilities in Satun.

The South has seen a surge in Covid-19 infections this week after 42 Muslims who had returned from pilgrimage in Indonesia tested positive for the disease.

They will be escorted by embassy officials! Lets hope the military are around to catch the runaways.
