The Cabinet on Wednesday (April 15) approved cash gifts for government officials whose work is related to fighting the Covid-19 outbreak, Deputy Government Spokesperson Traisulee Traisaranakul said.

“The move to disburse gift money from the Bt2.7 billion budget to civil servants who have been working to fight Covid-19 was proposed by the Office of the Civil Service Commission,” she said. “Those who work in direct fields, such as doctors and nurses, will receive an additional Bt1,500 in their monthly salary, while those who work in supporting fields, such as police officers and military personnel, will receive Bt1,000.”

The disbursements will be made from April to September.

“The Cabinet also approved the Office's proposal to appoint 38,105 personnel in 24 medicine-related fields to civil servant positions to fulfil personnel needs in the government agencies,” added Traisulee. “The appointments will be done in three batches, in May, August and November.”

The Office said that it has provided 320,000 health insurance policies to civil servants in medical fields who are under the Ministry of Public Health, Royal Thai Police, Royal Thai Armed Forces, University Council and Local Administration Organisations.

Let me first say I'm not a financial/investment expert in any way.

But now after stating there is not enough money to sustain payments to those whose livelihoods are affected by the current situation, could they not access their foreign exchange reserve (220 Billion USD) ?

I would like to see a transperent list of who gets what from this.

No chance! Never! Transparency doesn't exist here. Only opaque and vague details and disclosure.

govt approved graft, bonuses for govt workers that are simply doing what they are already  paid for, nothing new really

Healthcare staff deserve more recognition and overtime if they are working longer hours. Many idividuals in the service sector are now unemployed, no revenue, no social security yet their claim for the promised 5,000 Baht support is continually rejected. There is a grave injustice being committed by the so called government of Thailand here. The ordinary hard working Thai people deserve better.

The foreign reserves are from the BoT, not the government. The government has a yearly budget that they can spend, which needs to be appproved first. The BoT is a seperate institution which is supposed to be independent.

If the government had direct access to those foreign reserves, there would be no USD left in there anymore by now.

All this cash they are said to be giving out, and ok for government officials to receive cashed gifts, Why did they make so much fuss over opposition leader Thanathorn, he lent loans that were declared, there will be no telling where all this cash goes.

Unreal. Civil servants are one of the main reasons you don't have any money because they leach so much out of the taxpayer with all sorts of excessive perks/pay rises/creative accounting etc. and get away with it just so as to keep them in line. Really is a slap-in-the-face to your average Thai that they just said to everyone about the government not having any money so you can forget the handouts after a month. How tone deaf can you be to announce this the next day?
