Thailand developing vaccines against COVID-19

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Director-General of the Department of Medical Sciences, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, said today that Thailand now has a team working towards the development of vaccines against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The team comprises members from various institutions, led by the National Vaccine Institute (NVI).

The NVI Director, Dr. Nakorn Premsri, explained that vaccine development involves the synthesizing of ribonucleic acid (RNA), deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or fragments of the virus. An experimental vaccine can then be tested on hamsters or monkeys to see if it has any effect on the immune system. There are three phases of clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine. The first phase focuses on safety, with about 30 to 50 volunteers.

The next phase focuses on stimulating the immune system, involving 100 to 150 people. The third phase involves at least 500 volunteers to determine its effectiveness. If the vaccine is effective, the team will submit it to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval.

Meanwhile, the United States (US), China and England have made the most progress in vaccine development, having completed the first two phases. There are six vaccines against COVID-19 in development.

Thailand has three options for using vaccines. The first option is to develop and produce a vaccine in the country, which is currently under way. The second option is to cooperate with foreign countries that already have a vaccine and are testing it on humans. This alternative will enable Thailand to acquire it faster than other countries. The third choice is to wait for other countries to come up with a vaccine and then import it. In that instance,Thailand would have to wait longer and the price could be very high.

Here we go .. again .. Going cap in hand to the wealthy for a bail out then they are on about doing up their own vackine .. T'aint peanuts researching , developing and testing stuff like this you know ..

Collaboration with other countries would seem to be a logical approach but a bit more bondage to CCP is probably more likely ..

There will be no safe vaccine in the near future, unless someone gets really lucky..

I wasn't only talking about Thailand...

Pretty sure that is the most likely outcome. I can't recall  Thailand ever developing anything that is medically massed produced globally.

Once again Thailand's xenophobia comes to the fore.  The instinct is to reject anything invented abroad, even if it's done far better than Thailand could ever hope to do.  This applies to everything from the education system to the timing of traffic lights.

Can't risk diluting the "Thainess".

In my humble opinion, all nations worldwide should be collaborating on finding a viable vaccine ASAP. I know that Oxford University UK have been given permission to start human trials this week and if proved effective and safe, will go into production by the end of the year! Collaboration by all countries top brains needs coordination, which is in short supply at the moment, particularly when large, wealthy countries, who only think of themselves, stop funding World Health bodies!

I have distant memories of cures for AIDS, Ebola, and vacines for a few others.

Mouth-bigger-than-brain-disease is endemic in Thailand, perhaps they could find a cure for that? Or their ego, that would be a big help.

The spokes will fall out of the wheel?

Don't they know Bill Gates has his vaccine ready now, with a free nanochip.

The usual press releases that tend to lead nowhere. Where are the quick PTT/MIT/co test kits that were announced weeks ago?

In Thailand, if it's more than 9 days ago then it's gone forever and if it's less than 9 days ago then it's not ready yet.

I never saw or even heard of a nation with a higher opinion of itself with so little justification, though I have never lived in Africa or Greenland, perhaps there's more there...

Surely you are forgetting Thaiand's cure for AIDS, cancer and ..... so on and so forth....

@Matzzon why did you post a confused face ?? For a vaccine to be safe, it requires sufficient testing and long term studies.

Do you think a vaccine can be created, tested and released within a few months/year ??

There are 50+ projects around the world trying to find a vaccine, good that so many are trying as it isn't guaranteed they will find one

Where does this hate of Bill Gates come from? Also he would not have a vaccine for this coronavirus, not enough time has elapsed.  Anyway any references for ‘his lab’ that has produced this mythical vaccine?  Either put up or shut up.  Focus your hatred on some people who deserve it.  I can think of a few generals here to start with.

He did a pretty good job of co-ordinating and funding the near eradication of polio in Africa.

Whilst sacrificing a few kids health along the way... Just under 500,000 were affected by his dodgy vaccine I believe ??

He is a very clever guy, that is for sure... That's why he's the 2nd richest guy in the universe !!!

Bill Gates doesn’t have the medical knowledge or background to produce a vaccine.  He funds the research and rollout through qualified people.

The UK is experimenting with blood plasma from recovered victims as it contains the antibodies the immune system needs to fight the disease.

Many hate successful people because of jealousy.

I remember his a-holio business practices, as well as those of his buddy Jobs. Luckily Melinda seems to have mellowed him down.

Yet claims to be a medical expert !!

How long ago was it when Thailand developed the cure for HIV?

Actually it is because he is a mass murderer !!!

He owns the WHO and uses it to sterilize and kill people all over the world !!!

Just do some research. It is not a secret at all.

Ok ok! Sure, you´re right. I do believe it can be done within the time frame of a year, though.

And that the Thai Language was going to overtake English as the Number One Language used in the World.

Pure dreamers

Let us not forget the HIV/AIDs virus which Thailands handling & treatment was as good if not better than any other country in the world.
