9. Forbidden Planet

I have the DVD and I love it, from the pants scenery to the unbelievable robot ( wonderful ). The special effects were really bad, but it had a plot and wasn't PC. I saw it as a child and it stayed in my mind. It may not be the best movie ever made, but it lifted my imagination to the stars.

I like movies that leave me happy, not depressed, so almost everything by Studio Ghibli are my favorites of all time. I'm just sad it took so long for me to discover them.

Not having the DVD but did see it as child, and when it was aired again later I recorded it to tape.

When I watched it again, it felt a bit different as I had grown up so the eyes more focused on the effects and indeed compared with the years of production it was low. But still got the warm feeling from the 'remembrance'. Will always love that robot with antennas in his head.

Funny thing is that Leslie Nielsen has a role in that film, which I didn't knew.

I start like him and movies he is playing and only to knew many years later when internet was there and I first saw the cover that he DID play in Forbidden Planet.

???? Agree!

I had Howls Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away when I start looking for the makers and then found out about Studio Ghibli. Great content!

Have added Lupin, Nausicaa of the vally of the wind, Ponyo, Porco Rosso, The Cat Returns and Whisper of the Heart, since then.

Men In Black 3

This Is Spinal Tap

Deep Throat.

Funny movie, much unlike the zillions of boring porn movies that followed.

VHS basically allowed us to rent movies to watch, or record movies on TV to watch at a later time.  Given porn was not allowed on free to air TV, the porn industry took off when VHS arrived.

I seem to remember Top Gun being one of the most rented movies back then.

My favourite is Kiki's Delivery service. Second favourite My Neighbour Totoro. Third favourite Only Yesterday.

When Marnie was there is good but really sad at the end.

Didn't Leslie Nielsen play the captain of the ship?

Who remembers the first porn movie they saw on VHS?  ????

That would be in Singapore in the 70s. They were illegal so I had to ask a taxi driver and he took me to a building site where a few of us watched some. I only remember one involving an elephant.

My partner loaned me a John Holmes one in the 80s and I was quite impressed.

Romance, music, political, funny, porn

- Aadalen 31

- Hugo och Josefin

- Elvira Madigan

- Brasil

- Life of Brian

- Meaning of life

- Clockwise

- Holy Grail

- Libertarias

- Pink Floyd in Pompeii (if that counts)

- Deep Throat

Brazil was neither romantic nor funny, though I suppose it could be described as political.

Clockwise was great though, in a very Cleese way.

1.    The Karate Kid (obviously the original version and not that turkey copy. It is one of the greatest tragedies in the world that the second Karate Kid was ever made, I still get upset just thinking about it)

They shot scenes for "Karate Kid-3" at the local high school where I lived (Brookline, Ma)  My nephew who was a student at the HS got a bit part.

When the film was released he complained it was so awful, he couldn't brag to anybody about being in it.

Finding Forrester                              ok, not great,  but different

Nat King Cole singing the prelude to "Stardust" as the opening theme.  Without doubt, one of the most beautiful song verses ever written or sung.

Some amazing films on other people's lists.  Some real gems that I had forgotten about and will now seek out to watch again so "Thank You!!"

Maybe not great, but some memorable films not yet mentioned:

"The Man Who Never Was"  Clifton Webb (A quiet movie about a clever deception in WW2)

"The Enemy Below"  Robert Mitchum, Kurt Jurgens (Cat & mouse game between a destroyer captained by Mitchum and a U-Boat captained by Jurgens)

"To Have & Have Not" Bogart and a 19 year old Bacall. "You know how to whistle, don't you Steve?  You just put your lips together....and blow"

"Rear Window"  Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly, Raymond Burr.  A "peeping tom photographer see's more than he should"

"Dial "M" for Murder"  Ray Milland

"Lavender Hill Mob"  Alec Guinness

Two classic courtroom dramas:

"Witness for the Prosecution" Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton, Tyrone Power

"Anatomy of a Murder"  Jimmy Stewart, Lee Remick

Two great Lee Marvin "Bad Guys":

"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence"

"Cat Ballou"

Recently watched 'Death Hunt' (1981) again with Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin.

Quite a good movie with trapper Bronson being hunted by Marvin in his role of a tough-as-nails canadian mountie.

Hitchcock's Birds, Psycho, Frenzy, Vertigo...

Yes, you cannot go wrong with Hitch.  One of the Greats > did you forgget to mention Rear Window?

Recently also watched 'Who is Afraid of Virginia Woolf' with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

It's actually more a filmed stage-play.

But what firework between Burton and Taylor as a couple that cannot live with or without each other during an alcohol-drenched night!
