The government has outlined plans to boost small-scale livestock farming with Bt50 billion in soft loans from the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC).

The loan package, which has been approved by the Cabinet, is aimed at softening the impact of Covid-19 for local farmers and integrating crop and livestock activities, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, Prapat Pothasuthon.

Prapat spoke after a meeting in Nakhon Ratchasima on Wednesday (May 6) to discuss a plan to help local farmers grow Napier grass as a fodder crop for the northeastern province.

He explained that the government aimed to help local farmers raise cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, and native chickens, with financial support from the bank.

The government also wanted local farmers to grow Napier grass, an animal feed, in Soeng Sang and Pak Thong Chai districts. The grass will be grown around a cassava starch factory, since water from its septic tanks is full of nutrients like nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.

The grass will be sold to a local feed centre, while the province would be promoted as the biggest mixed-crop livestock production system in Thailand.
