Thaksin says Thai lockdown a mistake

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has revealed his thoughts on the Covid-19 crisis in Thailand, saying that the lockdown measures were a mistake that were damaging the economy.

Thaksin told BBC Thai that he had been following what scientists, academics and doctors had to say about the outbreak, and he believed leaders of several countries did not fully understand the virus.

He said his experience of handling the SARS and bird flu pandemic as prime minister in 2003-2005 led him to believe that it was not worth sacrificing the economy by imposing lockdown measures. Among the measures Thaksin used to combat the SARS outbreak was sending shipments of hand sanitiser to people in the Northeast, his heartland of political support.

Responding to the current crisis, he praised Pheu Thai Party representatives for distributing aid to people in the Northeast and also expressed admiration for former Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, who has donated medical equipment to several hospitals in Thailand.

He insisted, though, that he did not wish to be linked to current Thai politics. Thaksin was ousted from power by a military coup in 2006 and remains in self-exile after being convicted of corruption and sentenced to two years in jail in 2008.

When asked by BBC Thai if he wanted to return to Thailand, he said his only concern was for the hardship currently being suffered by Thais.

they might eventually find a cure for Covid19.

Well he could hardly have been expected to tell the truth and say that the government has done a world-class job of managing the virus so far.

Who  Thaksin and Yingluck ?   doubtful ????

  • Popular Post

He's absolutely correct, though not sure if him speaking out is good or bad. It may be good because his constituency will then be open to the idea of reopening the country, but may be bad because government may be reluctant.

The timing is interesting though - just as CP chief is saying Thailand should reopen for tourism. I think we'll see easing in June. (I hope at least!)

this global lockdown was imposed on most countries by stronger countries

and the WHO.

thailand had no choice but to comply with the WHO instructions, especially

when air travel was halted.

the interesting country to check is turkemenistan, where it is illegal to even

say the word corona or to use masks !!! because the dictator there believe this

whole corona thing is a hoax.

I think living in exile was good for him to learn engaging his brain and see what can be achieved in democratic countries.

But the crooks in charge here will never learn as long they don’t know anything about the outside world.

So do you have a link for that?
There's been a total of 2 cases in the Province where I live yet everything is closed for over a month and still closed.

GF was telling me that Thais on an FB group were running a poll and Thaksin had 5 times more votes than Prayut as preferred leader of the country right now. Therefore a lot of Thais actually do care about him. Even though he is a criminal fugitive, the GF said that all Thai politicians are corrupt though some are less corrupt, or, at least corrupt in the right way and look after their people (voters).

And does the GF know what Thaksin did to enrich himself? Of does GF only listen what the red-shirts and facebook tell her?

In my experience there are lots of Thais who support him. And most of them don't know the truth. They believe his propaganda. Ask any of them for details about Thaksin's crimes and most of them don't know or deny, deny, deny.
