Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwoʻole has been the focus of today's Google Doodle but what is his story?

 

Even if you don't immediately recognise Israel's name, you will know his gorgeous medley of Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World.

 

The cover version of these songs has gone on to be used in countless films and television series such as ER, Scrubs, Glee, Lost, and Life on Mars.

 

In his home island of Hawaii, Israel is especially revered, often being dubbed the "voice of Hawaii".

Didn't bother to read the article since they didn't even get his "home island" correct, he was born on Oahu and raised on Ni'ihau.   Met him when he was just a "big guy" he later ballooned to massive size,  great talent, like so many loved food too much.

He used to perform at the Royal Hawaiian's weekly Luau in the early 90's...
