Twenty-five of the 399 Thais who returned home on Monday (May 26) from Japan, South Korea and the Maldives were found to have high fever and rushed to hospital, Suvarnabhumi Airport deputy director Kittipong Kittikachorn said.

The Thais arrived on five flights at the airport.

“Some 175 Thais in Japan, who are mostly students and staff of the Japanese Embassy in Thailand, arrived from Tokyo on All Nippon Airways Flight NH847, THAI Flight TG643 and Japan Airlines Flight JAL31,” Kittipong said. “Preliminary screening found that 14 passengers had high fever and they were rushed to hospital, while the other 161 were transported to the government’s specified quarantine facilities in Bangkok and Pathum Thani.”

Another 78 Thais stranded in the Maldives flew in from Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Maldivian Airlines Flight Q2-9350. Immigration staff found that one had high fever so the person was immediately sent to a hospital in Samut Prakan province, while the rest were transported to quarantine facilities in Chon Buri.

The other group of Thais arrived from South Korea, touching down at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 9.45pm.

“Among 150 passengers who came back from Seoul, 10 were found to have high fever and were sent to hospital, while the rest were sent to three hotels in Bangkok to complete the mandatory 14-day quarantine,” Kittipong added.

As of May 25, Japan has reported 16,550 confirmed Covid-19 cases with 820 deaths, while South Korea has reported 11,206 cases and 267 deaths.

Both have been praised by the international community for effectively handling the outbreak. Meanwhile, the Maldives has reported a relatively low number of confirmed cases – only 1,078 and four deaths.

This is exactly why Thailand is right to have the strict quarantine requirements.     This is why Thailand can control new outbreaks.     UK (and others) take note.

There will be no follow up on this, same as the 9 Thais who arrived from the UK with high fevers just a week ago. Almost sounds to me like Thailand is attempting to emphasis how dangerous other countr

Thailand has done a great job controlling and containing the outbreak so far.

Thats a bit harsh, not allowing foreigners back under any circumstances.

Anyway lets see in the daily reports over the next few days how many of these cases reported today actually develop COVID as there's been no reports yet of that. The 9 Thai's from the UK with high fevers who returned a week ago would have had tests by now so obviously no positive cases as there's been none reported.

To be honest I fail to see how this is a news story unless they tested them first to confirm they are infected.

14 from Japan had high fever? I thought Japan had the virus under control?

Aren't you a foreigner yourself?

If there are valid reasons besides tourism, I don't see why foreigners should not be allowed.

So all these thais are getting sick on the flight???? There is plenty of screening at the airports they left from, so why arent they getting treated there??  One big hoax

They have every right to.

Thailand has done a great job. The UK is a complete shambles.

The valid reasons to be allowed entry are here:

https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2020/05/25/new-normal-access-to-thailand-even-after-flights-resume-if-virus-persists/

Being married, having kids with a Thai, retired or being a student are not valid reasons.

At the moment and in the opinion of the Thai government anyway.

What has the UK got to do with it. Why single the UK out?  This is about Thai's returning home from Japan, South Korea and Maldives.

However you decided to add foreigners into the mix by stating they should not be allowed back under any circumstances. Good for you! Your opinion is duly noted, however I disagree entirely as its flawed and draconian.

These terribly sick people with their dangerous fever are foreigners?

Why so limited measures, better kick them dirty foreigners all out and the problem is solved, isn’t it?

No........................ they just contracted the fever in a foreign country.  The Thai policy is sound.

Nothing racist here......................... move on.

Japan has the virus under control in the sense of not testing in a meaningful way if people have the virus. Hence, since few people are tested, very low Covid 19 case and death figures.

Just like Thailand.

So, if avoiding large scale testing and pretending you have low numbers is having the virus under control then yes Japan, Thailand, Nigeria and Uganda have it well under control.

Nonsense.

Confirmed case figures have no relevance to death rates.

The only meaningful measure is death/million population.

In that respect Thailand is doing very well........................................ or do you know where the bodies are being hidden.

don't think they need to emphasize, other countries are far more dangerous...

Yes, but for how long. When the tourist baht beckons they'll open the floodgates from north faster than their Northern Masters can wolf down a bowl of bat soup.

Open is a big word.

That is only for the temporary situation in March when the virus was spreading fast in Thailand and rest of the world.

At that time, most people in the world didn't know how to react to the pandemic but now there are measures to lessen the spread like wearing mask, social distancing, frequent hand cleaning etc.

With the current extremely low number of cases in Thailand and some other countries which had the virus under control, preventing foreigners from entering the country isn't logical.

If the virus is going to last for another 5 years, are you saying that all foreigners aren't allowed to come into Thailand for another 5 years?

Same with the SK cases.  19 total reported in SK but 10 with fever on 1 flight into Thailand?  Need to see the test results since fever doesn't equal COVID.

So quarantine doesn't count as "follow up"  ?

What about the so-called "fit to fly certificate"? Or has that been dropped?

Nope the results of a Covid test is the only follow up. A high temperature can be the result of many differing infections. The quarantine is just part of the blanket procedure for all arrivals.

So, you think those in quarantine, and exhibiting symptoms, will not be tested ?

I would certainly expect that and why I am waiting for a followup, like I said there has been no followup yet on the 12 Thai's from the UK. So no doubt the high temperatures they had were all found to be from different causes.

Lets see if there is from this group. Otherwise reporting high fevers on incoming passengers is just scare mongering, I know of no other country doing this unless they've tested first then report the actual positive cases.

Interesting that these potentially infected never seem to actually add to the count of positive cases on the daily tally.
