‘To defeat virus, 9 out of 10 Thais must follow Covid-19 rules’

Dr Rungruang Kitpati, spokesman for the Public Health Ministry, on Tuesday (June 9) advised on Facebook that three things were necessary to defeat the Covid-19 outbreak so the country could return to normal.

 

The government is expected to announce the fourth phase of lockdown easing soon, after the number of new daily Covid-19 cases dropped to a trickle.

 

Rungruang explained that the first action necessary to defeat the virus was reducing the infection rate as much as possible.

 

"For example, if 1 million people are infected, up to 100,000 people will die because medical personnel will be overwhelmed by the situation," he said.

 

The second action was conducting proactive testing to seek out new Covid-19 infections, he said, adding that this was the trump card in beating the virus.

 

"We need to find these patients so we can contain the spread of this disease as soon as possible," he said.

 

The final thing needed was cooperation from everyone.

 

"If 90 per cent of people act in line with the government [health] measures, I can confirm that we will definitely win the battle against Covid-19."

So, yesterday it was announced that it was 14 days since the last reported internal case of C-19, another 14 days is required to declare being Covid free, all incoming people are taken to mandatory quarantine for 15 days (yes, 15 as confirmed by a Thai friend of mine who arrived in to Thailand on Sunday 24th May and was released yesterday) all those in quarantine take two Covid tests whilst in quarantine, 1 after 4 days and 1 4 days prior to the end, once released then they have to say where they are going to and be tested further after arriving at their destination (again confirmed by the same friend).

Given the above, then there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to continue with any measures or restrictions post 1st July assuming there are no reported internal cases between now and then.

If there is, then it is no longer Covid related.

Yesterday evening went out to buy food in BK. Saw one police officer. He was looking at his phone, smiling and not wearing a mask. Says it all. TIT.

So that's 10% of all infected people die, not because there's a 10% mortality rate, but because it's much higher than that and they can't save everyone?

He should get his facts right before going public.

Maybe the continued pressure to distance and maintaining the lockdown measures has to do with the government paying attention to data that we don't have easy access to and which would suggest that there's more of a problem than is being reported. A recent NYT article interprets recent data to say that in March Thailand had 1,800 more deaths than would be expected give past data. That month, 12 Covid-19 deaths were reported rather than 1,800.

so those 2 pictures floating around yesterday of the subway ride and the dinner where no one was wearing a mask. were they all the 1 in 10 that didn't need to wear one ? 

 

i am so confused. 

Have 9 out of 10 Thais/Siamese ever followed any rule in the history of mankind?

I'm going to straight out call BS on this one. Unless those 1M are all yais with pre-existing conditions in the sticks. IFR has never been 10%.

I doubt it. As long as they are allowed to make "announcements", the madness will go on.

Actually the advice from all or most experts was 8 out of ten. Being that it seems to be lessening and NZ saying eradicated one would think the 9 out or 10 which as the R naught number would now be somewhat reduced.

We all know that testing here was not very good so this is B*.

This statement doesn't support the covid numbers. Indeed travelling home I saw plenty of restaurants open with plenty of people. Probably they could drink water or Coke etc but not alcohol because as has already been stated drinking alcohol encourages the spread of the virus. Sit eating with family or friends and drink water is ok. Do the same with a beer or two isn't. This is just the ultra-conservatives in power forcing people to their ways which has absolutely no scienfic basis backed by a state of emergency .

we were told yesterday that 60% in northern italy had antibodies and WHO said that asymptomatic carriers are NOT infectious.so..........2 massive game changers .how can any type of lockdown be justified?perhaps its about control and letting people know that.we do not have an elected entity running the show and it shows,regional travel needs to be allowed as many people have important and pressing issues to attend to.the cuffs need to come off very shortly and the economy needs to work ,forcing penury and poverty on people in these circumstances is .....well absurd and the fact is china is first back thru the door tells us many things,they that lie ,they that cause this hardship are rewarded,they that threaten and cajole the region.excuse me whilst i vomit.

Like the headline say 9 out of 10 Thais must follow Covid-19 rules’...… so he is probably that 1 in 10 who doesn't has to follow the covid -19 rules  together with some other elites ones I guess ????

To achieve this level of acceptance the rules must remain wise and based a sensible cost benefit justification. Forcing people to wear masks on empty beaches, having mums, dads and kids eating on separate tables, banning wine and beer served with meals is just mindless bullying with no added value that will hamper any upturn of the economy.

Following the personal hygiene rules, washing hands, not touching face etc, is not difficult and should be followed in any event. Restrictions on life, well apart from places that rely on tourists, nothing has really changed apart from signing in to go into a mall, small nuisance .

 

Thanks for the chart on "undefined deaths" in Thailand.

The data does get a tad fogged up, however, in that traffic deaths (which are not reported to world standards last time I looked) were way down during this period, so if normally 2k a month goes to 200 gives you lots of "slack". As many have pointed out, bad driving is the true pandemic in this country.

Graph does not state "in March" but states "from March". And with the downward slope of the 2020 line I'd suggest the 1800+ might be a mistake and should be 1800- due possibly to the reduction of traffic.

Before one is doing „copy / paste“ from a magazine, one should do a background check, what those numbers mean in reality !

 

- Thailand had in 2018 a death rate of 7.66 / 1000 population 

- That results in 535,087 deaths per year (based on a total population of 69.8 million)

- So the average number of daily deaths is 1,466

That means: the „excess deaths“ are

equivalent to just ~30 hours

of the average deaths rate !

 

Additional to that:

The 1800 „excess deaths“ are just 0.34 % of the average yearly deaths.

... since when do we assume in ThaiVisa, we can trust Thai statistics to have such an extreme accuracy ?
