Three year old shoots himself with his father's gun

Tragedy struck at a house in the Thung Song area of Nakhon Sri Thammarat in the south of Thailand.

A father who had been sleeping outside the house rushed into his bedroom where his five year old and three year old boys had been playing.

A shot had rung out.

The three year old was rushed to hospital but was found to be dead from a chest wound that had exited through his back.

A .357 gun and one spent cartridge was found in the room.

The father kept the gun in a bag hanging from a window. Sanook reported that the three year old had played with the gun many times before but it had never gone off.

Gunpowder residue tests were made of the two children and the father though it is believed that the three year old shot himself.

Absolutely tragic, RIP little boy, but I'm surprised we don't hear more such tragedies given the number of guns in Thailand and the careless and carefree attitude of many owners. The USA has five times the population of Thailand, and it seems that on average around 1300 children a year die from a gunshot ( https://edition.cnn.com/2017/06/19/health/child-gun-violence-study/index.html ). That would be equivalent to 260 deaths/year for Thailand's population, or five children dying every week, but it actually seems to be quite a rare occurrence here. Perhaps many cases are not reported, or maybe the Thai parents are more safety-conscious than I give them credit for (something I seriously doubt)?

Not only was the gun not secured and available for the children to access, but was kept loaded.

Failed parenting 101 it seem.

What penalty will he face ?

Let’s a 3 year old play with a loaded gun numerous times and doesn’t think something bad might happen ?

I know Thais have low I.q on average but this guy is miles ahead or behind because he’s surely single digit I.q !!

"The 3 year old son had been playing with a loaded gun before without shooting him self."

What a pathetic excuse from the father, he should be prosecuted for murder of his son.

Isn't there a law in Thailand to keep firearms locked up in a safe place?

This was from awhile back, but I didn't realize so many had guns here.....................

Asia

A look at Thailand's fervent gun culture

Widely known as a welcoming tourist destination, Thailand is also a country awash with easily obtainable firearms, featuring one of the highest gun homicide rates in Asia. DW examines why gun ownership remains so high.

Thailand has the highest reported rate of gun-related deaths in Southeast Asia - almost 50 percent more gun homicides than the Philippines. With 7.48 registered violent gun deaths per 100,000 people, the rate is also twice as high as that of the US, which had 3.55 deaths per 100,000 people in 2013, according to data provided by the University of Washington's Institute for Health and Metric Evaluation.

The whole article. Some are for hunting?  There isn't any legal hunting here so what are they shooting? Chickens?..............https://www.dw.com/en/a-look-at-thailands-fervent-gun-culture/a-19060721

More irresponsible gun owners here, and more dead children.  It is something that needs to be addressed, but alas it never will.  In the west the father would be held responsible for the death and charged.

"Responsibility" is too big a word for most to understand, and has many connotations.

How's about "Guns are not for playing with"? And lock them away out of sight. Or maybe the father thinks he might need instant access to it, in which case stick it in his belt, or carry it on his person when in the house.

But to leave it hanging in a bag by the window, and let a 3 year old play with it "MANY TIMES"beggars belief - braindead!
