WHO warns of oxygen shortage as COVID cases set to top 10 mln

GENEVA (Reuters) - The world faces a shortage of oxygen concentrators as the number of worldwide cases of coronavirus infection nears the 10 million mark, the World Health Organization head said on Wednesday.

"Many countries are now experiencing difficulties obtaining oxygen concentrators," WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference. "Demand is currently outstripping supply."

The new coronavirus has hit 9.3 million people and killed more than 480,000 so far and is rising by about 1 million cases per week. This has pushed oxygen demand to 88,000 large cylinders per day, or 620,000 cubic metres of oxygen, Tedros said.

The sudden rise has created a dearth of oxygen concentrators needed to support breathing of COVID-19 patients suffering from respiratory distress.

The health agency has purchased 14,000 oxygen concentrators from manufacturers and plans to send them to 120 countries in coming weeks, Tedros said. A further 170,000 concentrators - valued at some $100 million - will be potentially available over the next six months.

The head of the WHO emergencies programme, Dr Mike Ryan, meanwhile said the pandemic in many Latin American countries was still intense as deaths in the region surpassed 100,000 this week. Many countries had experienced 25-50% increases in cases in the past week, he said.

"I would characterise the situation in the Americas in general as still evolving, not having reached its peak yet, and likely to result in sustained numbers of cases and continued deaths," he said.

The United States has criticized WHO's handling of the pandemic, calling the agency "China-centric". President Donald Trump demanded an immediate review and reforms and has pledged to quit the Geneva-based body.

European governments are also working with the United States on an overhaul plan.

While Tedros has pledged accountability and a post-pandemic review, Ryan said on Wednesday the agency was holding internal talks over its actions including what it has learned about controlling the virus.

Got to die of something, if it's not this it will be something else.  Call it what you like.

Oh, and as to Oxygen, go outside, there is plenty out there.  Come  to think of it, my house and garden are full of the stuff, well about 21% of the air that is.

I note the absence of the "It's only a 'flu and more die from influenza" brigade .

Have they read the science and the reports recently and found themselves failing?

look at your statistics...

more OLD people have died than normal

and LESS young people or newborns died (parents don't vaccinate in hospitals = LESS SIDS = sudden infant death syndrome..)

There's a lot of great info and graphs on this page that breaks everything down by states, age etc in regards to covid deaths.  No fear mongering, no panic statements, just facts from the reporting government figures.

Amazing how the infant death rate is down. I'm sure pro vaxxers will explain it away that more mothers are at home keeping a better eye on their kids etc.

Do you count the US's celebrated pandemic guru Dr Anthony Fauci as one of the brigade? He is on record of saying the consequences could be no worse than a severe flu pandemic.

Not that this should make us complacent. Flu typically kills up to 650 million people a year, according to the CDC. But these regular culls do not typically lead to politicians to run around like headless chickens, savaging citizens rights and freedoms and destroying their domestic economies.

I'm old enough to remember that the Hong Kong flu epidemic of 1968 killed nearly twice as many Brits as has this latest corononavirus (evening using the Government's grossly exaggerated mortality figures). Yet hardly anyone turned a hair and life went on as normal.

Could there possibly be a hidden agenda behind the relentless COVID-19 fear-mongering by so-called "experts", politicians and the mass media? Nah, obviously just a coincidence that the World Economic Forum has come out swinging, demanding a total "reset" of the global economic and financial system.

Crikey - if flu kills 650 million a year then in 10 years 6.5 billion will have died i.e. about the entire planet.

The figure you are looking for is between 290000 and 650000. Even with all the strict controls, lockdowns and quarantines, covid-19 has taken 480,000 and is still rising at 5000 a day. The 1968 flu was met with no lockdown, no controls and.. hey presto 80000 deaths. If nothing had been done this time the figures this time would have been at least comparable.

But I don't think there is a hidden agenda. Possibly more just opportunistic. A chance to get rid of western countries colossal debts by economic change, then back to the same old same old. No great 'new dawn'...

with all the hot air that comes out of their mouths ..... global warming has taken yet another hit

According to statistics verified by Mad Magazine,  there have been 3.775 percent more deaths than that caused by Covid ............. by

people's masks getting caught on an object while traveling at a high speed .    A newer easy release mask is being brought out,  after more testing is done on its effect on the environment.

Who will not sanction said mask as they do not own any stock in the company.

Using dubious WHO figures above the

mortality rate as a percentage is 0.52%.

Still not much different from seasonal Flu.

No. Much different.

Yes, the same WHO who change their advice according to new research and knowledge about the decease. Anything wrong with that?

Am I seeing the contours of a conspiracy theory? Please give us your thoughts on this as you've obviously seen things the rest of us haven't.

-Who's behind it.

-What do they want to achieve.

-How exactly have they managed to fool almost all of us (except you, of course).

PS. PLEASE tell me that George Soros is part of the whole dastardly plot!!!

You got the idea right, but the name wrong. Keyser Söze is the man pulling all the strings.

Well yes, a hell of a lot wrong.

1. Masks are common sense, which WHO and most western authorities dismissed with "they're not 100% effective and can provide a false sense of security". Good grief. Even a bandanna would be effective if you're talking to someone who doesn't show any symptoms and better if they have something.
2. Asians used masks to control SARS and swine flu.
3. Studies existed to show the effectiveness of masks, which were ignored. Here is one.. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(20)30134-X/fulltext?

Patronising attitude, ignoring past experiences, and/or sheer incompetence cost thousands of lives, especially in Western Europe. Can you imagine how many lives would have been saved if masks were common (especially in aged care homes) as they are in Asian countries, which by and large have blown Covid away. Even the subcontinent has miniscule death rates per mill by comparison, let alone East Asian countries.

Yep, a lot wrong.
