(Reuters) - Hundreds of scientists say there is evidence that novel coronavirus in smaller particles in the air can infect people and are calling for the World Health Organization to revise recommendations, the New York Times reported on Saturday.

The WHO has said the coronavirus disease spreads primarily from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth, which are expelled when a person with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes or speaks.

Rising coronavirus cases in 39 U.S. states cast a shadow over the nation's Fourth of July celebrations as health experts worried that holiday parties will cause a further spike in infections that could overwhelm hospitals. Freddie Joyner has more.

In an open letter to the agency, which the researchers plan to publish in a scientific journal next week, 239 scientists in 32 countries outlined the evidence showing smaller particles can infect people, the NYT said https://nyti.ms/2VIxp67.

The WHO did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Whether carried by large droplets that zoom through the air after a sneeze, or by much smaller exhaled droplets that may glide the length of a room, the coronavirus is borne through air and can infect people when inhaled, the scientists said, according to the NYT.

However, the health agency said the evidence for the virus being airborne was not convincing, according to the NYT.

"Especially in the last couple of months, we have been stating several times that we consider airborne transmission as possible but certainly not supported by solid or even clear evidence," Dr. Benedetta Allegranzi, the WHO's technical lead of infection prevention and control, was quoted as saying by the NYT.

for one, pictures of virus are FAKE ... electron microscope is BLACK & WHITE only... this is an "artist" render of a virus

With new technology now producing two colors, maybe not a good idea to be using the word "FAKE", but, easy enough to google.

wear a mask or catch covid19 ....   I have always said logic says wear the damn mask.

People who ignore that covid 19 is an airborne virus, are not logical. Until narcissist Trump and his sycophants lead the way by appearing on TV wearing a mask, it will continue.

As for the UK - well to encourage binge drinking and congregations of customers at pubs is another matter that is not logical.  I sense that behind Boris' back door, together with that Cummings C**T, the herd immunity experiment is back in place. With the majority (c.70%) of infected people only having mild symptoms, and building antibodies, like Boris, only 30% of the population will risk death.

That's only around 20 million people.

Competent leadership does not lead to a jurisdiction being the worse hot spot of COVID-19 on the planet. But thanks for a good laugh.

Like Texas Arizona and Florida?

It seems to me we are fresh out of *scientists* and *experts*, but have a plentiful supply of political activists and propagandists.

Where do you get your virus knowledge from.

And the *experts* continue to make it up as they go.

And your diversions are getting soooo tiresome. Do I really have to explain to you what scientists do? Is that the level you're at Craxy Alex?

Did you notice that the scare tactics aren't talking about deaths, but rather only giving reports of new cases?  Who cares about cases, what matters is how many healthy people are dying from this?  If you are not healthy, lock yourself down.  Don't force healthy people to succumb to your unhealthy lifestyle.
