Thailand develops one hour COVID-19 testing kit with 97% accuracy

BANGKOK (NNT) - The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) has launched a COVID-19 one-step test kit which is easy to use. The result will be known within about an hour and can be accurately read with the naked eye. It has also launched an RNA extraction kit for COVID-19 tests using domestic reagents and equipment to reduce the risk of a shortage of extraction kits during the crisis.

Mr. Narong Sirilertworakun, NSTDA Director, disclosed the successful development of the COVID-19 RNA extraction method from a simple sample and the Colorimetric RT-LAMP COVID-19 test kit which can yield a result in a single step. He demonstrated the process of COVID-19 RNA sampling and extraction and using the research team’s COVID-19 test kit.

The DNA extraction for COVID-19 detection using domestic reagents and equipment makes it possible to detect pathogens in humans, plants, and animals. It is as efficient as the imported extraction kits and cheaper. It can be used with chemicals that are avalable in the country and reduces the risk of a shortage of extraction kits during the epidemic. It is compatible with existing domestic disease detection equipment and enables Thailand to change from being an importer to a manufacturer of test kits.

The Colorimetric RT-LAMP COVID-19 test kit has high specificity and rapidity with up to 97 percent accuracy. The result is shown in 1.15 hours, much sooner than the imported kit. If it changes from purple to yellow, it means the result is positive. Importantly, the testing materials are 1.5 times cheaper than the imported test kits. These two inventions will help the country reduce imports of RNA extraction kits and test kits if there is another COVID-19 outbreak or proactive tests are needed. They are ready for use immediately.

Yep, it says 'Hab'  & 'No hab'   I would imagine 'No hab' would be the most popular response given. ????

Then roll it on out, free of charge of course for all those living in high risk areas, and of age where they may be possibly infected already but asymptomatic.  Or is this just all hype without the real issue being taken care of.  Test and see is my belief.

Don't know, anything Thailand "develop" should come with a big grain of salt, the biggest there is...

What I miss in this article, and many others, is the question how long after the infection this will show a positive result.

Will it show "positive" when a person was just infected on the flight to Thailand?

Or will it only show if the person got infected maybe 3 or 7 days ago?

It explains that they have the virus, but it definitely wasn't their fault. Someone else gave it to them, and it wasn't due to anything that they did, or didn't do.

It's designed with 'Face' in mind. ????

Do I understand this correct that you think we should all blame ourselves if we get the virus?

Personally I wear a mask and I try to do social distancing. But I don't think it's impossible that I get the virus.

We can all be cautious but there is a certain amount of bad luck involved.

That be the Clamp test...Clamp the front door and test the backdoor.

This is a not a new "development", its just that its now being manufactured locally in Thailand. The test itself has been around since March at least.

Being manufactured locally is a GOOD thing though if it makes it more widely and cheaply available.

I also would like to know what is the incubation period before the test will pick it up ??

so is it a blood test or nasal swab or what??

What utter tosh just like the coconut bullet proof vests cures for Ebola etc because one could go on and on. At best this will be stolen work or at worst like the bomb detectors that could not even get a random yes no percentage on detection. When tests from leading farms are giving false positives for cold virus, flu virus and even vaccine there of. Tosh utter Tosh.

97% accuracy

1.5 times cheaper than other methods

1.15 hours to get results

After 2 weeks in quarantine and no symptoms, then negative result. Otherwise positive.

If 97% accurate, and the wait time before exam is accurate is less than 2 weeks, then maybe possible to end quarantine after a negative test result.

I suspect the test is not 97% accurate, or can only detect the virus two weeks after initial infection.

This test kit sounds very similar to the SARS-Cov-2 Rapid Colorimetric LAMP Assay Kit launched by New England Biolabs in July 2020.

Great!

Problem solvesd bring the tourists back!

But I am guessing, there is more (or a lot less) to the story!

Ebola, anyone?

I am sorry I don't have much to add, however it is a nicely coloured box, ???? ???? ????

And yet the reported number of new HIV cases around the world climbs higher even though Thailand found the cure a few years back !!

excellent!  and since there is no covid19 in all of thailand, why not put the millions of tourism-related unemployed to work producing these kits for export to less fortunate countries.

they could even consider providing these to america in exchange for submarines or laser railguns.

Great!  No more excuses mass testing is too expensive~test everyone and quarantine those positive.

Is there a Thai price and a foreigner price~even though foreigners developed the technology?

In late March Sky News UK showed a report from Thailand demonstrating a 90 min locally developed test. Needless to say it disappeared without trace. Now it maybe that it wasn't sensitive enough and it has been refined successfully. The problem is that to many times have Thais come up with something which hasn't been tested/scrutinesed to international standards. We'll have to wait and see or should I say not hear on this one.

So the title was one hour and 97% accuracy.

Then in the text it says 'up to 97%' and '1-1.5 hours'

30% is 'up to 97%'

1.5 hours is 505 more than 10 hour!

Ah LAMP, very good, better than PCR. So, how many can they produce, what about the sampling procedure, how will these be distributed, when can I go get one?
