Exactly true. The virus is completely apolitical. It does not care in the least whether it is a pro-Trump rally or a BLM protest, a crowd is a crowd is a crowd.

 

That said (1) outdoor crowd situations are much, much safer than indoor ones (e.g. crowded bars) - again regardless of the reason for the outdoor crowd; (2) crowds were people are spaced at least a bit apart and are on the move (e.g. marching) are safer than stationary crowds packed closely together,  and (3) mask wearing by people in a crowd definitely helps reduce risk.

 

I haven't seen any evidence linking increased cases to any outdoor gatherings - not the Trump rally or the anti-lockdown protests nor the BLM protests. Not to say there has been zero transmission from these events but there clearly has not been a big surge due to them. Which is perfectly consistent with what we know about outdoor vs indoor transmission in general. By contrast there has been evidence clearly linking people going into crowded bars and the like to a clusters of cases.

 

People packed closely together, unmasked, indoors = super spreader events. Basic biology. Whether they are there to have fun, or to protest A,B,C or D, the virus could not care less.

 

Will they never stop politicizing this public health emergency????

150,000+ dead Americans and counting under Trump's watch. The man who denied the virus, claimed it would just magically go away, opposed face mask wearing, bullied states and governors into reopening when they hadn't even met the government's own guidelines for doing so, has repeatedly promoted fake cures/unproven medications, and on and on.

 

NO ONE has done more to politicize the CV pandemic than Trump and Co., to the misery and death of the American public.

I fully agree with most of your post above, Sheryl. But I will note, the Tulsa City-County Health Dept. came out after Trump's Tulsa event and said they believed it had contributed to a major spike in local cases shortly thereafter. And that's hardly a lefty government talking. I don't think they can prove it scientifically, but that's their publicly stated belief.

 

And of course, I believe at the time it was against general public health guidance to hold that kind of mass rally at all, but Trump wasn't going to be dissuaded by public health advice. No Trump rally, no anti-Trump protests. Problem would have been avoided.

I'm also guessing, there's a somewhat different environment between an event like Trump's rally vs the BLM street protests around the country. There were few mask wearers at Trump's event, and the people were pretty much seated and in the same place together for long periods (the arena's attempted efforts at social distancing seating were undone by Trump's campaign). Whereas in the protests, I'd wager a much higher share of folks were wearing masks, and they were moving about outdoors and probably not as closely packed together.  I'm not saying there's no risk in either, but I'm guessing there's a higher risk in a Trump type, no masks setting.

As Fauci has pointed out, it isn't his job to ban protests, close schools and businesses, enforce the policing of the same, or make judgement on the rights and wrongs of them.  His job is to advise.  He made it perfectly clear that ALL crowds are potentially dangerous, and advised people to steer clear of them.  Until (if) each activity is made illegal, people have the right to decide whether to follow that advice or not. The lack of comprehension skills shown by Jordan is concerning in an elected official.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with this at all.

Unlimited donations from self-interest groups have always plaugued American politics but never has political 'corruption' been so evident and blatantly abused than with Trump and the current GOP. From massive tax breaks to the winding back of envornmental limitations to climate denial, Trump and the GOP are not even hiding their corruption any more and is why you see such a massive push to get America back working despite the human consequences.
I didn't see this in the Obama administration nor the Clinton administration so I would suggest that although there may be some corruption with the Dems, they are rank amatuers compared to the GOP.

Trump simply cannot handle dissension or someone contradicting his story line. He is not man enough. His pathological lack of self esteem, masked by extreme grandiosity, means skin thinner than a pimple faced 9 year old. He cannot let stuff go. And every time he does that, he diminishes himself, makes a fool of himself and demonstrates to the planet how ill equipped he is for the job of president.
