WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump was abruptly escorted from the White House briefing room on Monday shortly after a shooting outside the fence surrounding the complex.

Trump returned to the media room after several minutes and said a person had been shot by law enforcement and to the hospital. He said he understood the suspect had been armed.

"It was a shooting outside of the White House," Trump said. "It seems to be very well under control. ... But there was an actual shooting, and somebody has been taken to the hospital. I don't know the condition of the person."

He said the shooting was near the fence at the edge of the White House grounds.

Nobody else was wounded in the shooting, Trump said. He praised the Secret Service response and said the agency would have more details on the event later.

"There were no details - we just found out just now," Trump told reporters.

The Secret Service did not immediately respond to queries about the incident.

Minutes into a news briefing, Trump was taken out of the room with no explanation for the disruption. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought were also taken out of the room and the doors were locked.

Trump told reporters he was taken to the Oval Office outside the briefing room after he was escorted out.

Of course he was cool, they didnt tell him. All the said was that he needs to leave.

Bunker Boy gone again.

What an absolute Joke of a President! He’s inside a walled building, a building with walls and bulletproof windows, with a small army of armed soldiers and surrounded by a team of people with guns...and he’s still afraid that the has to hide in his little bunker!?! If Joe Biden we’re president, he wouldn’t runaway, he wouldn’t hide in his bunker, he would face it head on! He would save America, he would end systemic white supremacy infecting the US and put a stop to racism.  Joe wouldn’t hide but now we see Trump would

When the Secret Service interrupts a press conference and tells the President he has to leave, President Trump knows something serious is going on.  Both President Trump and the Secret Service handled it well.

I watched the press briefing which contained the usual large amount of false and misleading claims by trump. Was there a 'serious' treat to the life of the president, nope, but he did handle the situation well for a change, didn't start blaming democrats...

So maybe it was all just an excuse to force him stop lying for a few minutes.

Why do they keep resorting to violence? Because the Republicans make it so easy for any nutjob to own a gun.

Stop him momentarily and in no time he was back with more lies. Old habits die hard.

Obviously it's good when the Secret Service does their job.

And it would be even better if the guy who they protect would do his job - at least from time to time. Unfortunately there is not much hope for that anytime soon.

The report only confirms that somebody who was armed was shot by officers, so they did catch the ‘subject’ who is not yet confirmed a ‘shooter’.

Who you believe ‘they’ are and on what basis you claim ‘they keep resorting to violence’ is a mystery.

Obvious the others, those f#%#ing DEMS, socialists, communists, CNN, etc. ????

I understand people wishing to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights, but outside the White House is perhaps not the place to do so.

However, I suggest we all put a pin in that.

Trump was taken out the building by security , it wasnt Trumps decision .

Never the less, an understandable decision .
