Majority of Scots support independence from UK - YouGov poll

LONDON (Reuters) - A majority of Scots support independence from the United Kingdom, a YouGov poll found on Wednesday, with support for nationalists bolstered by a much more positive view of how they have responded to COVID-19 compared with London.

 

The poll for the Times newspaper found that 53% of people would vote for Scottish independence in a referendum, up 2 percentage points from January and the highest level of support for independence recorded by YouGov.

 

It is the latest poll to suggest rising support for Scottish independence and could strengthen calls for another vote on the matter, after Scots rejected it in a 2014 referendum by 55%-45%.

 

The Scottish National Party, who run the devolved administration in the nation, insist they have the right to call another vote. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the 2014 referendum was decisive and should be respected.

 

The poll also suggested the SNP were on course for an unprecedented majority in the Scottish Parliament in elections next year, setting up a possible constitutional clash with Westminster.

 

Much of the increase in support appeared to be linked to diverging views of the leadership in Scotland and the United Kingdom as a whole. Some 72% of respondents agreed Scottish First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon was doing very or fairly well, while only 20% said that for Johnson.

 

The YouGov Poll found 52% of voters believed Scotland was going in the right direction, up 20 percentage points from when the question was last asked a year ago.

 

Sturgeon's Scottish Government has responsibility for health policy, and she has been more cautious than Johnson in easing lockdown.

 

Scotland, which holds about 10% of the UK's population, has had no deaths from COVID-19 since mid-July. The UK, which uses a broader methodology to count deaths that is being reviewed, as a whole has recorded 1,362 deaths in that time.

 

YouGov polled 1,142 adults between August 6-10.

Most of us think Sturgeon is doing well.

You know, it doesn't have to be acrimonious; we have different aspirations, that's all. Why can you not accept that the majority of Scots feel that they would be better served looking after their own affairs? It is not a rejection of you personally. 

 

Good to see that you already have the flag ready for when we split - hopefully it won't be long until it is flying proudly from every building across England.

Is this the same poll that's mentioned in the op, if so the wording is so heavily weighted by asking "should Scotland be an independant country" when a more fair way of asking would be for example 'what would you vote for in Scots indy' as shown shown.

Still too close for Mrs Sturgeon I'm afraid and she knows that if she loses another referendum it would be toast for her, and she would lose all the adoration usually reserved for royalty.

Worth bearing in mind that while it is, indeed, tight at present, we haven't even had a single day of campaigning yet. Last time round, the Yes campaign started around 27% or so and got up to 45% by polling day. While much of the low hanging fruit is obviously still in the basket, the soft Nos are getting softer by the day, with nothing seemingly on the horizon from London to strengthen their Union resolve.

All you are proving is that it was weighted the time of the first indy then.

if I remember correctly, with your mate Bannork's figures including those who couldn't be bothered to vote, this wasn't sufficient for you on Brexit. You can deflect as much as you want, but the proof is in the post, so I wont even bother reply to any of your tripe on this one.

How will you feel when, with independence, your taxes go through the roof? Already higher than England but kept rather quiet. Scots with the wherewithal are quietly buying English property to class as their primary residence.

Why do you think that would be the case? The purpose of independence is to take our own decisions about expenditure, taxation etc. Why do you think we will have a similar cost base?

Have you evidence of that? Not that I have any concerns about it - it is perfectly legal, but while I see lots of posts on social media from English people moving or planning to move to Scotland in the expectation of independence, I have never seen word of any of Scots moving south because of what they see as the threat of it.

It was the Russians that stopped Scotland being independent.

 

It was the Russians that helped the UK become independent from the EU. If you believe the constant tripe from the mainstream media and the Scottish TVF mafia on here.

 

Personally I am bored to death with Scotland and their independence and the posters on here who hijack every thread, at every opportunity.

 

It is fine for them to seek it but not the UK from the EU. Talk about double standards and total hypocrisy.

 

Once the UK is free from the EU, I am happy for Scotland to go on their way. Sadly many Scottish friends with intellect, are not happy at that thought but with a fanatical leader in Sturgeon, she has one agenda only.

 

I am more interested how Scotland and Sturgeon manage the Economy, the NHS and Education. Great job there eh!

 

Scotland will end up like their world cup football teams of the past. Awful goalkeepers, sub standard players, maybe one that is good but have a great fan base supporting a team that have nothing to offer except an early exit.

You have knowing of that being true. Kirkcudbright and Dumfrieshire were once part of England. But today they are part of Scotland. If the border wars had ended differently they'd be English. What the <deleted> does it matter? We're all one irrespective of which part of the UK we live in..

Depends whether you consider 1,100 people to be a 'nation'.....and 47% of those didn't want independence.
