Initially misled by staff about cost and then repeatedly lied to by a doctor who said I HAD to stay in when in fact it was not necessary. Paid 50% of the shockingly big bill just to get out. Anyone had a similar experience? Please advise/guide what steps could be taken now. They threatened telling passport control if I do not pay the other 50%. I believe there is a government agency that deals with overcharging. Anyone had experience of dealing with them? Or anyone know a good lawyer? Thank you in advance for your help.

Difficult to say anything regarding your case as you don't give any details. I have not heard of such government agency, but any claim is likely to be pointless anyhow. The core issue here is that people have gotten the wrong idea that medical services are cheap in Thailand, they are not. Right now getting treated in France would cost you less, while the places like Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital will charge you as much as hospitals and doctors in Geneva.

Also @Sheryl recommends a minimum heath coverage of 3 Million Baht for those who stay here.

These are serious allegations. If you have proof about the administration giving you a wrong quotation and you can also show beyond reasonable doubt that your extended stay was unnecessary, then you have grounds for complaint and may win the case. If not, you don't have a leg to stand on (no pun intended).

Thanks for your replies. The doctor did not force me to stay but made it seem like I had a life threatening, highly contagiuos disease and so must be kept away from the public; the nurses added to my fear because they could not get out of the room fast enough. Disgraceful !

Thanks for info about hospital costs in Europe. Yes, Thailand not cheap now.

So which disease are you supposed to have? You didn't publish your name so you don't disclose any personal information.

In the meantime please stay locked up in a room with your highly contagious disease. Thanks

I do not expect everyone to support me, just like to know what can be done about it based on others' experience.

1. Apologize to the hospital staff.

2. Maybe try to negotiate. Negotiate = talk to each other. Don't just walk away and don't be rude.

3. Pay your bill.

4. If you think you paid too much get a lawyer and complain.

I am not trying to do a runner on the bill. Insurance dealing with my claim.

What disturbs me is the lies. Doctors should not lie.

In that case, let insurance sort it out, they have whole departments that dispute excess charges.

Without knowing what procedure/illness you went to hospital for, its a little hard for even a doctor to determine if you were lied to. or over serviced.

Any initial costing or quote would be subject to variations, complications etc. A good chance you signed a document on admission agreeing to such.
