14-day quarantine may not be enough, says virologist

Dr Yong Poovorawan, an expert virologist at Chulalongkorn University

There are four possibilities that Covid-19 can be found in people who have already undergone the 14-day quarantine, said Dr Yong Poovorawan, an expert virologist at Chulalongkorn University.

In a Facebook post on Thursday (August 20), he listed the possibilities as follows:

• The incubation period of the Covid-19 virus is usually two to seven days, but can also take as long as 14 to 21 days. “So, those who have already undergone 14-days quarantine are advised to self-isolate themselves for another 14 days to ensure they don’t spread the disease,” he said.

• People may get infected while undergoing quarantine in facilities, such as a cruise ship. “Hence, we will have to prevent people who have undergone quarantine in state facilities from coming into contact with others,” he said.

• There is still a small possibility of Covid-19 infection in Thailand. “Though this possibility is slim because Thailand has been free of local Covid-19 for more than 80 days, it can still happen,” he said.

• There is a possibility that the patient has been infected from overseas, and they may carry a small amount of genetic viral material that is difficult to detect. “After the patient arrives in Thailand, they may test negative at first but turn positive later as was seen at the start of the outbreak,” he said.

The virologist said in a study conducted on 212 patients, he found that 6.6 per cent of them showed symptoms four to 12 weeks after they were allowed to return home.

“However, the virus was very weak, so the possibility of spreading the disease to others is very low,” he added.

The media hysteria is fuelled by the need of so many ‘experts’ to have their moment in the spotlight with ‘maybes’  !!!   In decades and generations this whole saga will be taught as a case

There is another possibility. The testing is not up to scratch, giving false results, both positive and negative.

  • Interesting to see how all over the world scientists want their daily dose of attention. They only get attention by telling their opinion: The virus is more deadly, the virus is more harmless now

Everything is up in the air.  Speculation versus facts.  Has anyone anywhere done a case study to show if and how quarantine can be effective.  14 days, 5 days, 21 days.  What is the truthful answer and are asymptomatic carriers able to transmit the virus or not.  Has anyone done a study on that by testing a culture of an asymptomatic person and putting it under conditions such as to make it spread, or make it die or just sit and spin.

  • Popular Post

The experts in the very early days said it that can be up to 21 days asymptomatic and 14 days quarantine may not be long enough for everyone .

Well now that makes me feel a whole hell of a lot better.  Very low possibility.  It only takes one out of 64 million to create a possible spread possibly.  "I may have to possibly go poop after eating", "I may possibly get arrested for drinking and driving".  What a bunch of fake news he is spreading, possibly.

Let's face it: quarantine means isolation of 40 days

So let's not beat around the bush and enjoy a 40 day stay at one of your preferred cell, sorry hotel room

Lets put it this way all the while they have a 14 day quarantine policy in operation nobody is going to come here for a holiday and that's a lot of lost jobs and lost revenue. In the meantime the 100's of deaths every week are ignored by those in power

What kind of advise is that? Isolation for 28 days when there's no reason to. Talk nonsense like that and no one will listen, even when good advise is given.

They only get attention by telling their opinion: The virus is more deadly, the virus is more harmless now, wear masks, don't wear masks.

Scientific studies are boring, nobody is interested.

I still believe in science, but scientists are clowns.

Scientists can tell us everything without proof because the media need their daily horror stories.

Correct.

Since there are no studies, common sense tells me that 14 days is enough. How many who tested negative in state quarantine spread the virus? Not one.

Lets just go back to living in caves it really seems to be the solution the world is heading for!

Okey dokey just lock the country down indefinitely. I am sure the people in charge will all be absolutely fine. So a few serfs might suffer they're little people they don't matter....

They all should listen to the your common sense! ????

TAT will soon be rushing out plans for tourists to quarantine for 21, 28, 35 or just pick a number from a hat number of days. Say goodbye to the tourism industry.

The media hysteria is fuelled by the need of so many ‘experts’ to have their moment in the spotlight with ‘maybes’  !!!

In decades and generations this whole saga will be taught as a case study of how we listed to flawed and uncertain information and played Russia roulette with our economy.

Look at this news - 14 Day Quarantine ‘may not be enough’.....   1 potential case with an almost infinitesimally low viral load, basically dead RNA, recorded...  1 Person of country of 77 million - potential 25% unemployment.

Thats 20 million people going hungry, even if the Thai Chamber of Commerce’s 25% unemployment projection is 5x too high, what about 5% ?? that still 3.85 Million People unemployed which is still devastating to a society with very little social welfare.

Open up the borders - Allow Tourists with a Covid-19 test.

Test arrivals and track and trace.

There will be further outbreaks - but really, is it that bad ?????

the US is quoting 170,000 Covid-19 deaths (in 6 months so far) yet 2,840,000 people die each year anyway.

How many of these deaths are ‘extra’ deaths ?????

We really need unadulterated facts - not this media frenzy fuelled by a political stance.

So to be safe let's now say quarantines need to be 30 days, and be be really, really, extra-special safe - two months.  And maybe better to close the borders to Thailand to all foreigners forever.

The world has lost it's mind over a flu.

28 day quarantine?  So says the virologist with a steady paycheck and no mask.

28 Days Later...

It's about time a leading Thai virologist came right out and said this. These people sneaking back into the country, paying only a few hundred thousand Baht to be repatriated, should be flogged and forced to stay at least two months in a windowless cell, with rice gruel three times a day (no egg) and definitely no WiFi from now on. Oh, and wear a face shield as well as a mask while asleep too.

Harsh but fair but not sure 2 months is long enough lets make it 6 just to be sure....plus tagging lets tag the blighters...

This virologist always makes the statements which are the most fear inducing as possible. I don't take his statements seriously anymore. He is a pure fear monger.

There is plenty of research to say that people are not infectious after 11 days from being infected so a 14 day quarantine is more than enough. The numbers of people who are infectious after that are a very small minority (tiny), and are people who get extremely ill with covid and are usually are very aged and have multiple comorbidities. There is no possibility of these people being released from quarantine and let into the general population as well since they will be in an infectious disease hospital ward being treated.

It's been stated from the start of this outbreak in China that the incubation period could be much longer than 14 days. That's old news. And to be honest I get fed up with COVID 19 hysteria. It's just another virus we have to deal with. There's no need to shut down the whole world. The governments went insane with WHO included.

  • Popular Post

And again this man creates fear, panic and hysteria. Why does he do that? I haven't heard of any other country or any other recognized specialist yet asking for this. What is his aganda?

Back in February, there were reports from China that in some cases an incubation period of up to 28 days had been observed. Better increase the number of ASQ  facilities and double the published cost estimates, lol.

Great post. US is actually showing a lower death rate on average comparing with previous years. That's a strong argument that the COVID 19 deaths are not real. People die with the virus, not from the virus.

While in the rest of the world, 14 days are seen as sufficient, and only in case you return from a highly affected country
