A Black man was hospitalized in a serious condition on Sunday evening after police in the U.S. state of Wisconsin shot him multiple times causing crowds to gather and demonstrate at the scene.

 

(Reuters) - Protests erupted in Kenosha in the U.S. state of Wisconsin after police shot an apparently unarmed Black man multiple times in the back, according to the state governor, prompting authorities to impose a curfew.

 

The incident on Sunday was likely to add to continuing outrage and protests in the United States and abroad against police brutality and racism since the death on May 25 of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man, after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

 

The victim in Kenosha, identified by Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers as Jacob Blake, was hospitalized in serious condition.

 

A video circulating on social media and cited by the U.S. media showed a man walking towards a car followed by two officers and one of them shooting him as he opens the car door.

 

Soon afterward, multiple fires were set at the scene by a crowd that gathered to protest against the incident.

 

Social media posts showed crowds marching down streets of Kenosha, a city of around 100,000 people on Lake Michigan about 65 miles (100 km) north of Chicago, and throwing Molotov cocktails and bricks at police officers.

 

Police responded by imposing a city-wide curfew until 7 a.m. local time (1200 GMT).

 

The shooting occurred at around 5 p.m. as officers were responding to what they called a "domestic incident". The victim was immediately taken to a hospital by the police, according to a Kenosha police department statement. No further explanation was given by the police as to what led to the shooting.

 

The Wisconsin Department of Justice said early on Monday that officers involved in the shooting had been placed on administrative leave.

 

The state's Division of Criminal Investigation said it would aim to issue a report to prosecutors within 30 days, according to U.S. media reported.

 

Governor Evers, in a tweet, said Blake had been "shot in the back multiple times in broad daylight", adding: "We stand against excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black Wisconsinites."

 

He said that while full details of the incident had yet to emerge, Blake was among Black people to have been injured or "mercilessly killed" by police in the United States.

 

"We stand with all those who have and continue to demand justice, equity and accountability for Black lives in our country," Evers said, mentioning Floyd and other victims of brutal law enforcement.

 

"We're tired of it...We're tired of it," Clyde McLemore, who local Kenosha TV identified as part of a nearby chapter of the Black Lives Matter movement, said at the scene:. "The frustration is boiling to the top and we're sick and tired."

Most people in the US agree that there is a need for wholesale police reform.

 

The irony of the news reporting is that police mistreating blacks is a fraction of the black on black crime which largely goes unreported. 

 

Why aren't the blacks policing their own neighborhoods?

Not irony, the police are employed to stop crime, and here they are committing crimes.

What's their justification for shooting someone, who's unarmed, in the back more than once?

 

The police need to know, if they shoot an unarmed person they will lose their job and spend the rest of their life in jail.

We dont know if he was unarmed. He was resisting arrest and going to the drivers seat of his car like he was on a mission though.

Simple reforms like making discplinary actions against officers public, better training, better initial screening, don't hire police who've been fired from other departments, have and publish metrics monthly, no excuses for bodycam not working.

 

We've had "police reform" for as long as I can remember (1960s onward). Every major city has probably had at last one big "commission" to investigate police corruption like the Knapp Commission in NYC. Pretty sure Teddy Roosevelt tried to refom New Yorks Finest circa 1895?

The video clearly shows he was unarmed and shot in the back 7x from an arms length.

There's no excuse in the world anyone can make to justify this crime.

The policeman needs to go to jail for the rest of his life.

People from the scene who witnessed the incident say police were yelling for him to drop a knife. He kept on with guns drawn trying to get into a car with children inside.

I do find it ineresting that white men with military-style weapons playing soldier can swan around Walmart, or occupy their State House, and the police treat them with deference. But OMG, an unarmed black man, "must shoot".

 

Anyone who denies systematic racism in the wider U.S., and among the police, is not being truthful with you or themselves.

 

"All men are created equal..."  "With Liberty and Justice for all...". I think I realized these words were "aspirational", and not representative of reality, in the third grade. 

 

Ultimately Insurance companies will drive police reform, without which cities and towns will go bust.

I realize you think this is a clever argument and a real good zinger, but there's black militia groups too, and they get the same treatment as white groups. Both if which I support until either start making terroristic threats.

At most, nothing that a little zap with a taser wouldn't have taken care of.  As far as 'something in his hand', we had a guy shot near my home who had a mobile phone in his hand.

So you're suggesting those police are the only one's in the US without a taser?  Failing that, you're saying one bullet in the leg wouldn't have stopped him? Or even one bullet in the back?

 

He absolutely needed to be shot 7x at close range, no other solution?  Are you going to suggest the officer showed great restraint by not putting all 15 bullets in the magazine into the guy?

this is certainly not my area of expertise but i think a contributing factor to trigger happy police is the abundance of guns in USA, they play better safe then sorry and there was a chance the black guy was heading for a gun in the car.  to make this assertion there has to be plenty of guns in cars

This seems to be a recent phenomenon, of which I was unaware, but am happy people are exercising their rights. NFAC, awesome.

 

In the 60's the Black Panthers began to exercise their 2nd Ammendment rights, after which serious gun control legislation was passed.

Could it of been handled better? Yes. Shoot him in the leg? Clearly you've never shot a pistol before. 

 

Bottom line is that we dont know the full picture of the incident yet, and clearly it is not a simple case of an innocent man executed in broad daylight. Its complicated. 

 

Taser might of worked if they got good contact, but if it didn't then you'd risk an armed felon running off in a car with children inside.

Right, so then you'd know that trying to shoot a 10" patch of leg meat while its moving and you yourself are also quickly walking, during a very tense situation, is next to impossible even for the best of shots, and an illogical proposition to ask of anyone.

The police were called to the scene as there was report of two white women were fighting but  a black man ended up shot like 7 times in the back. It doesn't matter what his history was and the police didn't even know who he was. Was this the correct way of handling the matter? I think in most countries, he would have ended up in custody without being shot.

See, I dont see any color in this situation. You, and everyone else, seem to want this to be about his skin color, and not his actions, that contributed to his death. Its the same old, boring, stale argument everyone makes.
