Im kinda getting the impression that a guy gets sIated and/or viewed with bemusement for choosing to Iive a singIe Iife (ie: no gf/bg/etc). Unfortunately Thailand does not have a global reputation that many who live here feel proud of. It’s a shame, but it’s a simple fact that many come to Thailand because of its reputation.

I for one, came here not fully aware of its reputation (fresh out of Uni) to work for in international Co. I have stayed here ever since and love the place (more so than the counter balancing frustration that would exist any foreign country)... and naturally I have had girlfriends here, as I would had I lived in any country for any length of time.

Do men come here for Thaland’s pay for play reputation ? of course…

Do men come here for many other reasons, temples, culture, food, weather ? of course… And.. golf would also be a biggie… combine a gentleman’s golfing trip with few nights of wildness and the golfing trip becomes less gentlemanly but you’d have more takers…

More often than not the reasoning for males to come to Thailand will be the abundance of attractive and available ladies here. However, everyone already knows – generalisations are far from accurate.. but generally.. they work.

My dear Cdnvic, I assure you my life doesn't suck and I'm happily, very happily, married to a non-Thai Lady but whe both love LOS so much....and sometimes we'll enjoy sipping a drink on an exciting outside cafe-terrace, watching the circus on Walking street or elsewhere in Thailand.

Serious though: Sometimes I am completely amazed by the 'variety' of Farang men, walking with a young Thai girl..hand-in-hand, without any shame about their own...hummm, appearance, bodywise so to speak, on their way to an expensive seafood restaurant, spending lots of money on lobster dishes, trying to impress their girls/ladies.

But, it's a two-way kind of 'relationship' and the cartoon above has probably more truth in itself than it shows.

There is the Farang man who's probably (apart from age) INDEED a kind of man who's lonely and there is the girl who's looking for more financial security, whether for herself and/or family.

In both cases...it's sad, true, but understandable; Is it LOVE....? I doubt it, but both benefit.

LaoPo- Please be warned I'm on the way to Thailand in June. I'm about 185 cm tall and weigh about 95 kg, and am 45 (gray/bald still a work in progress). Am coming with my girlfriend who is about 150 cm tall and weighs about 43 kg, and is 32. She has a tattoo on her lower back, typically wears jeans and a tight top, is very dark skinned and is from Isaan. When we go on our annual vacation, we drink a lot and spend a lot of money in restaurants, including in seafood places--and we love lobster! The last time we were in Maine she averaged more than 2 per day of the real thing (homarus americanus). We plan to spend time in Phuket and will be walking hand in hand there, and maybe even feeding each other lobster (since it's a tourist area). So I guess I'm one of those fat farang tourists showing off for his bargirl (she's worked in factories since 13, but we like to tell people she's a bargirl just for fun).

So if you get down to Phuket in June hopefully your drink sipping, "disney" show watching self and the missus can have some fun watching us!

I just came for a "suck it and see" kinda experience. planned on taking in about 40% of the world on a big slow tour up to my 40s. So far I like so much about LOS I am staying. I also like challenging the stero type. Rather than riding BG, I'll be found riding classic motorbikes, fishing, playing golf or building RC boats and planes. All things that interest me wherever I am but more fun in the sun. Not met a single girl that is interesting in sharing these pursuits but I have many thai friends who enjoy helping and playing together and in the process we learn each others language and cultural differences sometimes. I'm getting the best real world education. I like learning. Not everything is great but thats real life.

My first month I learned enough about thai women to go onto the other lessons...
