Couple who pointed guns at protesters tell Republican convention that suburbs in peril

(Reuters) - A white St. Louis couple who brandished guns at Black Lives Matter protesters outside their home in June were given a prominent speaking slot at the Republican National Convention on Monday, repeating unfounded claims by President Donald Trump that Democrats will destroy America's suburbs.

Speaking amid new protests over the police shooting of a Black man in Wisconsin on Sunday, Mark and Patricia McCloskey, who face felony weapons charges for threatening protesters with guns, said U.S. neighborhoods would be overrun by crime and lawlessness if Democrat Joe Biden wins in November.

"No matter where you live, your family will not be safe in the radical Democrats' America," Patricia McCloskey said.

That message follows repeated allegations by Trump, as part of his "law-and-order" campaign, that vengeful "mobs" are tearing down Democratic-run cities. In one recent tweet, Trump - keen to win back the votes of white, college-educated women - declared that "suburban housewives" wanted safety and that a Democrat in the White House would bring chaos to neighborhoods.

Biden has decried violent protests and has resisted activist calls to “defund the police." Instead, he says his focus is on ending systematic racism inside law enforcement agencies.

The McCloskeys, both lawyers, shouted at protesters and pointed weapons including a semi-automatic rifle at the demonstrators, who appeared unarmed as they marched by their home.

On Monday, they criticized authorities for charging them but no one among what they called an "out-of-control mob." They have said they were within their rights to defend their property.

Trump previously called the charges against them a "disgrace."

"President Trump will defend the God-given right of every American to protect their homes and families," Mark McCloskey said in his convention remarks.

Ah the irony...

For the record, these gun-nuts live in the city of St. Louis, in a posh neighborhood called the Central West End.

And it is they who represent the "peril" (peril meaning they are insufferable and crappy neightbors), according to neighbors.

I missed that part during Sunday school bible study and 13 years of catholic school.

Two Corinthians walk into a gunshop...stop me if you've heard this one before....

For a secular government, we seem to trip over each other invoking God for eveything, and out-God-ing each other.

Suspect that if there is a God, she's bruised her face with so many face-palms.

To my mind, bringing a pair of clearly deranged gun nuts to the stage, to allow them to babble utter rot, probably did more damage to Trumps campaign than leaving them out. It shows all too clearly the tenuous grasp on reality these people have, and the president for letting them spit out their deranged propaganda. The suburbs have never been destroyed under democratic rule before, so you have to be at least a sandwich short of a picnic to believe it will happen under Joe Biden. There is probably a far higher chance of society going to hell if Trump continues at the helm.

The GOP is showing America who they really are and it is not nice. Rich white people with guns and a deep fear of anyone different from them spells disaster. It is a shame the COVID virus is killing the innocent and not these crazies.

The way the law is structured in Missouri, a citizen has the right to protect themselves and  property and if they feel  threaten, they can exercise lethal force!

Under what is referred to as “The Castle Doctrine”, Missouri laws allow individuals to use deadly force against intruders who disrupt the sanctity of private property and intend to cause harm. A legal owner of private property has no duty to retreat and has the right to use deadly force to prevent an attack.Jun 17, 2019.

Don't think they could find enough "speakers", what with Jerry Falwell Jr. having to send more time with his family, so they were left with idiots like the McCloskey's.

Utterly bad choice to bring up an irrelevant law, on your path trying to protect and glorify the criminals. Whenever, were the people they pointed the guns at inside their gate or fence? Even the poor deranged woman is walking outside her gates and threaten people walking on the streets with her gun, at the same time her husband is pointing his automatic rifle at people outside his property. To be able to, and seen as, protecting ones own property that would suggest that there is a threat on the property, right?

Or is the law actually allowing property owners to go outside their property and threaten people walking on the street as a precaution for what they might or might not do? If so, then it´s a really stupid and deranged law that should be changed by people with better brain capacity.

I agree parading sick violent haters like this couple helps Biden who is offering us a path back to civility.

The rabbi who is neighbor to Mark and Patricia McCloskey speaks out: ‘They are bullies’

When Rabbi Susan Talve heard that Patricia and Mark McCloskey would be among the speakers addressing the Republican National Convention, she decided she could no longer stay quiet.

“It’s so upsetting that they have a national audience,” Talve said. “It’s upsetting we make heroes out of people who hate.”

On one side of the world you have Belarus's President (for life?) issuing 300 medals to his security forces for their exemplary courage in facing down and subsequently torturing their fellow citizens, and you wonder..

On the other side of the world you have the President (for lie?...oops did I forget the letter K?) hosting a pair of self-entitled litigious over-reactors at his party's national coronation (oops I meant convention) while reaching out to his fellow citizens, and you wonder...

The UK banned guns, no more gun licence for me, now if the USA 'states' did the same then perhaps progress could be made.

Both sides are lying/lying by omission so badly about what went down here for political gain that I gave up trying to find the truth about it. If you read one side or the others version you are not getting the full picture

So your dismissing the  law in  Missouri as irrelevant lol!

The AG in Missouri makes reference to the law you dismiss in this news story!

“Enough is enough,” the attorney general said in a video message posted just hours after the charges were filed. “A political prosecution such as this one would have a chilling effect on Missourians exercising the right to self defense.”

“a large group of subjects forcefully break an iron gate marked with ‘No Trespassing’ and ‘Private Street’ signs,” St. Louis police said.
