Education drama! Cruel punishment or perfectly fair?

4pm.jpg

Picture: Sanook

A "Thai drama" has been brewing after a trainee teacher made her errant pupils do some lifting exercises of their chairs at a secondary school as a punishment.

The footage found its way onto Tik Tok and the comments on social media began.

If the first few comments on Sanook were anything to go by, this was seen as perfectly reasonable.

The teacher herself later went online to say it was a fuss about nothing. Some of the kids didn't even do the punishment and she didn't make an issue of that.

So what is reasonable punishment for misbehaving schoolchildren - and is this it?!

That begs the question of why you bother punishing the students at all?

In group of 40-50 students fit all kind "student". If some can act like they want, even student who want learn can't do that!

Those boys are lucky to have a hot teacher gal like that. I would stand on my head if she told me to do so.

I totally agree... depending on which 'head' are you talking about.

This is probably the class of nitwits that each grade has in high school. In classes like these, 50% of the boys identify as males but really are feminine in personality and don't have much actual interest in women. 25 % more actually want to get a sex change and become a woman. The remaining 25% of males are the troublemakers who do nothing all day at school other than annoy the teacher and classmates and will drop out by ninth grade, and very likely have some girl of equal mental capacity pregnant within a year. The teacher has a lot to deal with. It's hard to get this type of class in line especially with that useless 25% of annoying soon-to-be-dropouts lingering around.

And how did you come to such a bizarre conclusion?

Finland has the best education system in the world- no punishments, no uniforms, no bowing and scrapping and almost no homework!

Yes it does. Even when I went through it, many decades ago, punishment was a no-no. It wasn't as good back then as it is now, which is now excellent. They have done a brilliant job and one of the causes is that teachers must have a master's degree. The system is self improving.

Chair raising stuff.

Seems to me the trainee teacher needs to do some adult thinking, every chance the students just saw it as fun rather than punishment.

I still remember getting the order at school to blazer tails up and thwack with the borrowed class gym shoe for not doing geogrophy homework  - which was quite a laugh really until someone offered a spiked running shoe

Chair on the head seems tame

Personally as a retired teacher lasted 2 years the best thing is to bring back the stick.  Now I say this with a limit.  Not every teacher should have the power.  In each department there should be one teacher designated.

Working in my last school we had that and just the threat of asking a student to go get her was enough to solve problems with class interest.

Also another punishment would simply be to bring back permission to fail students. \\

If a child is failing in class then demand that the parents attend the school and speak with the teacher and the Department head.

again FACE is important you really do not want to be called to the school because Somchai is failing how do you explain that to your friends and family
