MG Cars - a few facts

Recommended Posts

Rather than an Opel/GM what you get with an MG ZS EV now is in fact a VW Tiguan clone.

That's because SAIC is a joint venture partner of Volkswagen now.

The MG ZS EV is getting rave reviews in Germany. And everybody can see that it is a total VW Tiguan clone.

thanks HauptmannUK - very interesting facts about MG. I knew it was originally British but didn't know modern MGs had so much GM tech. I guess many cars contain parts from other automakers.
I knew about GM's takeover of Daewoo after it went bust as I bought a Chevrolet Aveo in 2010 and was surprised that it was basically a Daewoo with a Chevy badge slapped on!
The fuel economy wasn't great and the servicing costs at Chevrolet were sky-high, but the 1.4l 4-cylinder engine was reliable and ran well.

Why not just bring back the fish mobile or the AMC Pacer as it was known.  No need for those new and fancy panoramic roof windows.  The Pacer had the view of the world from the outside.  We had one when I was growing up.  God awful car but great on trips for looking out and dreaming as the countryside went by.

But for Trans he could have this one

See the source image

Think I will give that a miss......????..........................????

Not only are charging stations not even remotely ready in Thailand for EV,s as a car can use

anywhere out of Bangkok but one needs to also consider the source cleanliness of energy

you are charging with, along with the time to charge (go & have a 2 hour massage)

Next is the battery disposal for the world to which India is getting advanced on how to do this in 5/6 years when millions of them need disposing of.

SAIC has had a joint venture with VW since 1984, when they built the China-specific Santana model. VW does not develop technology in partnership with SAIC, as GM does.

The ZS is not a clone of the Tiguan, although it obviously has similar styling cues.

VW electric vehicles are based on their MEB (Modular Electric Drive) platform. The MG ZS is based on a GM platform with Delphi (AC-Delco of years ago) inverter, and battery from A123 Systems (a Chinese-owned US company).

Not really, it's just that stuff that is a bit cheaper and doesn't last very long is usually from China.

You can even buy brand named items that are exact Chinese copies that fail early.

Anything with a battery in apart from a phone lasts a few months at best. Why would anyone want to buy anything Chinese now? especially a car pretending to be British. I would rather buy a bit more expensive from elsewhere, Japanese preferred over Chinese any day.

Anybody know about the MG pickup trucks? What technology? Any good?

About 10 years ago SAIC bought up the IPR of LDV (a British manufacturer of small commercial vehicles).  LDV made a 'Maxus' van and SAIC obviously liked the name because they established the small-commercial Maxus brand. For some export markets they rebadge them as MGs.

They use the same GM engines I mentioned in my first post. I would guess the drivetrain will be solid enough. What we don't know is how well paint, trim etc will hold up compared to the established competition. And resale value of course.

I loved Transams and James Taylor.

Are you single?????

Alas, no, plus my TA is now gone, had to leave it behind, just a distant memory of a fun 23 year relationship, so all I have now is singing James songs......

Note to potential suitors; only @transam calls it singing.

If a person could walk into an MG dealership and purchase a new MGB then yes...you can own a new MGB...well...a modern reinterpretation as I referred to in my original post.  Just like a person could have walked into a Ford dealership and purchased a Ford GT which was the modern interpretation of the original GT40 from the 60s.

Cobbling together an MGB does not constitute “purchasing a new MGB”

I did lol @ the Transmans  post, The irony of slagging the Chinese making MG cars then posting a video to a knockoff reproduction bodyshell !!

Interestingly the electric engine of the MG ZS EV shares some design with the Porsche Taycan, the so-called Hairpin technology of the copper wiring.

In terms of styling it's a total VW Tiguan clone. Except for the grill which was copied from the Mercedes A Class.

Everyone agrees though the MG ZS EV is a good car.

To be fair the Chinese would do a better job but then how hard can it be to slap together some panels produce from flogged out tooling that would have had sloppy tolerance to begin with !!

Now, now, if you are a Chinese type of guy OK, but please don't stoop to the level of slagging off British tooling, it doesn't become you...Very naughty, and I doubt you have checked the BMC tooling anyhoooo...Tut,tut...????

That is a far cry from what I was referring to in my original post.  I believe that you, as a self professed car aficionado with “Transam” as a nickname and “The Driver” as your pic should know that.

Think what you like, but you can own a new MGB......

My username relates to a car I owned for 23 years.

My Avatar is James Taylor, I sing his songs and I like his only film.....????

AND he is Still by all reports, a former POTY!         ????????
