Auto Insurance - What is recommended? Are there leading companies?

I know I need Type 1 Insurance.  Is there a recommendation for insurance coverage beyond the level to cover the cost of the car for medical and liability protection?  Are there leading companies with a good reputation for handling claims or conversely are there companies to avoid?  You can PM me if there are those to avoid and don't wish to publicly broadcast it.
