U.S. coronavirus cases top six million as Midwest, schools face outbreaks

(Reuters) - U.S. cases of the novel coronavirus surpassed 6 million on Sunday as many states in the Midwest reported increasing infections, according to a Reuters tally.

Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota have recently reported record one-day increases in new cases while Montana and Idaho are seeing record numbers of currently hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Nationally, metrics on new cases, deaths, hospitalizations and the positivity rates of tests are all declining, but there are emerging hotspots in the Midwest.

Many of the new cases in Iowa are in the counties that are home to the University of Iowa and Iowa State University, which are holding some in-person classes. Colleges and universities around the country have seen outbreaks after students returned to campus, forcing some to switch to online-only learning.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday said his state was sending a "SWAT team" to a State University of New York (SUNY) campus in Oneonta in upstate New York to contain a COVID-19 outbreak. Fall classes, which started last week at the college, were suspended for two weeks after more than 100 people tested positive for the virus, about 3% of the total student and faculty population, SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras said.

"We have had reports of several large parties of our students at Oneonta last week, and unfortunately because of those larger gatherings, there were several students who were symptomatic of COVID," Malatras said.

Across the Midwest, infections have also risen after an annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota drew more than 365,000 people from across the country from Aug. 7 to 16. The South Dakota health department said 88 cases have been traced to the rally.

More than eight months into the pandemic, the United States continues to struggle with testing. The number of people tested has fallen in recent weeks.

Many health officials and at least 33 states have rejected the new COVID-19 testing guidance issued by the Trump administration last week that said those exposed to the virus and without symptoms may not need testing.

Public health officials believe the United States needs to test more frequently to find asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers to slow the spread of the disease.

While the United States has the most recorded infections in the world, it ranks tenth based on cases per capita, with Brazil, Peru and Chile having higher rates of infection, according to a Reuters tally.

The United States also has the most deaths in the world at nearly 183,000 and ranks 11th for deaths per capita, exceeded by Sweden, Brazil, Italy, Chile, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Peru.

A SWAT team being sent in. Perhaps its time for a re think on the best strategies to cope with the pandemic because this is now becoming ridiculous.

I've never worked out how that is supposed to work. If someone is asymptomatic, they are not coughing or sneezing, so how are they spreading it?

Even if found, are they going to be isolated indefinitely?

Or hands and mucus/saliva then touching, desks, glasses, food utensils, anything,  and then some one handles it, then puts hands to face etc.. NOW they are infected and the pandemic keeps chugging on down the road with no end in site. I do not understand what is so complicated about this but 40 percent of the US population don't seem to get it. They probably overdraw their ATM (bank) account monthly and don't wipe either, but hey,

If that was true, IMO a lot more would be infected than are.

As for masks, the jury is still out.

Anyway, if it becomes law I'll wear one, but till then, along with almost everyone else where I live I won't.

Anyone fearful can wear one, or stay at home, or wear a full body protection, but don't expect everyone else to protect them.

The sooner a majority have caught it and recovered, the sooner we get to herd immunity and life can go back to some semblance of normality.

Sweden rocks!

Typical right wing canned yams, if you believe in preventative health measures somehow you become fearful, cowering in a condo. Actually those people have to work and have a family so, yes they are concerned. You have people spreading it because they are lazy, ignorant and somehow believe it is their 'right' to do this.

Their rights are the same as drinking & driving. No one would care if all you did was crash and kill yourself. Unfortunately drunk drivers kill innocent bystanders. That is why it is against the law.  Same principle applies in a pandemic. If all you endangered was yourself no one would care what you do, but when your actions endanger and infect others. Yes, that is BS.

183K today and all those whose tally had to be suppressed for Trumps RNC. heavy bump this week as they come in.  200K by mid month?! maybe sooner. This is not stopping.

Sweden rocks!

Sweden has been wrong! Now nurse'e resign coz they can't take nomore! They affreid second wave and have done so much work!

Sweden has admitted its mistakes. The greatest of these might have been sticking to the herd immunity plan. Neither Johan Giesecke, the former chief epidemiologist, nor Anders Tegnell, his successor and Sweden’s COVID-19 strategist, has admitted to trying to achieve this goal. Although it was never explicitly stated in Sweden that the objective was to achieve herd immunity, published statistics often indicated this might be the case. For example, at the beginning of May, 20–25% of the 2.4 million people living in the Greater Stockholm area had immunity. It was hoped that this number would reach 50% by mid-June. But statistics do not support this wishful thinking.

"The sooner a majority have caught it and recovered, the sooner we get to herd immunity and life can go back to some semblance of normality."

So to hell with those who don't recover, right?

Herd immunity is still an unproven conjecture.  And the jury isn't out on masks, all experts agree that they reduce the spread.

Herd immunity is effective on many communicable diseases, like measles and mumps. Nothing unproven about it.

So to hell with those who don't recover, right?

Hell or heaven, wherever they deserve to go. Life doesn't come with a guarantee of long life- disease, war, car crashes, assault etc etc etc can all see us departed life early. More will die of flu than corona, though some that die with corona die in fact of other diseases.

And the jury isn't out on masks, all experts agree that they reduce the spread.

If that were true they'd be the law in NZ, but they ain't.

USA covid number are one fat lie. Only 9k+ died from Covid19

Ah and dont forget 77 NHL players tested positive, just to test negative the next day. Test are useless

"Herd immunity is effective on many communicable diseases, like measles and mumps. Nothing unproven about it."

Herd immunity is effective on some diseases, and not on others.  This topic is about Covid 19, and herd immunity is unproven for Covid 19.  Is that too much for you to understand?

"Life doesn't come with a guarantee of long life..."

No on said that it does.  However most people think a long healthy life is a good thing, and and Covid 19 has prevented and will continue to prevent that for hundreds of thousands of people.  Is this another thing you don't understand?

"If that were true they'd be the law in NZ, but they ain't."

Here's something else you don't seem to understand:  New Zealand is a remote island country that successfully prevented Covid 19 from becoming established.  Masks are unnecessary in its circumstances.  Is that the only argument you can manage regarding masks?

A news release about testing irregularities in one of the labs used by the NFL does not support your absurd claim about the number of Covid 19 deaths.

Good question but look at all the viruses that can be spread asymptomatically.

Herpes

Hiv

Hepatitis

Coronas

Just to name a few.

But like another said yes, I think just a sneeze or a cough will probably do it.

Sweden still doesn't have heard immunity, how many deaths in the US do you think it would take to obtain heard immunity. More than you want to count and more than what Trump wants to responsibility for. It cost nothing to wear a mask and possible save a life.

  • Popular Post

I guess eventually people in the US will figure it out, do not listen to Trump on the virus, what ever he says do the opposite. He says go to school, stay at home, he says go to work, stay at home, drink bleach, please do not do that, and take injections of lysol, I think I will pass on that.

Glad you don't live in Thailand anymore, after 6 months you still haven't got a clue about how the decease works or which countries are doing the right things: The United States also has the most deaths in the world at nearly 183,000 and ranks 11th for deaths per capita, exceeded by Sweden, Brazil, Italy, Chile, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Peru.

No, it's to protect the wearer and those whom the wearer is coming into contact with. If you don't wear it, you're exposing yourself AND innocent people who have made a choice to reduce their exposure.

So whose rights come first? When it comes to wearing seatbelts, where harm could result for yourself and others as a result of your actions, the Law has determined that the State DOES have a right to compel you to undertake actions you may or may not like for the public safety of yourself and others. This is the same thing.

Wish to point out that the health team in NY, SWAT stands for "Sanitary Wipes And Tissues" not special weapons and tactics. ????

yes, I think the USA should throw everything open, then data suggests 80% will be infected and we will have a good few million dead and hospitals overwhelmed. There is no evidence of herd immunity. Why do you think we still have the flu. Why is the whole world not immune to the Flu by now, it's been around long enough. Sweden's record is not good whereas New Zealand's record is good. Sweden is a less densely populated country and probably has a much more compliant population than the USA. The USA has well earned the situation it finds itself in.....

Has anyone seen this news? https://www.ibtimes.com/cdc-finds-only-6-coronavirus-deaths-are-solely-covid-19-3037136

Only 6% (~9000) are strictly COVID related? Considering the absolute state of hysteria around the world I still do not know a single person, 1st or 2nd hand that has had COVID and died with flu-like symptoms.

This is exactly what I expected from a President from reality TV. The supporters are deserving.
