Nearly 58 million watch VP debate, big jump from 2016

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Mike Pence's debate with Democratic challenger Kamala Harris attracted 57.9 million television viewers, a sizeable increase from a similar pre-election debate in 2016, according to Nielsen data released on Thursday.

 

The viewership figure for the Wednesday evening matchup in Salt Lake City included people watching across 18 networks. The tally came in 36% higher than four years ago, when 37 million people tuned in to see Pence debate Democrat Tim Kaine.

 

During the policy-heavy 90-minute event, Pence and Harris clashed over the Trump administration's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

 

Vice presidential debates typically draw smaller audiences than presidential clashes. President Donald Trump's Sept. 29 debate with Democratic challenger Joe Biden pulled in 73 million viewers, making it the second-biggest event on U.S. television this year, after the Super Bowl.

 

The TV viewing record for a vice presidential debate was set in 2008, when Biden debated Republican Sarah Palin. That telecast drew 69.9 million viewers.

For the Pence-Harris matchup, Fox News Channel <FOXA.O> led all networks, with 11.9 million viewers.

 

The Nielsen numbers included people watching at home and at such venues as bars and restaurants. It also included some digital viewership through televisions connected to the internet.

 

The figures do not capture the full extent of online viewing, which has grown in popularity as traditional TV audiences decline, however. The debate was streamed live on Twitter, YouTube, network websites and other digital platforms.

The debates are not aimed at changing the voting intentions of voters who have already made their minds up.

 

 

Pence's misogynistic lack of respect for the female moderator by incessantly talking past his allotted time certainly didn't help him win the coveted suburban woman voter. Most polls have either a tie or Harris winning the debate.

 

Interestingly, this vice presidential debate was the second highest viewed only being topped by the Biden/Palin debate in 2008.

Women are accustomed to men in positions of power interrupting them. When interrupted, a person is saying what you have to say is not important. I am far more important. Pence got major demerits for that heinous behavior. Now, Trump gets major demerits for labeling Harris a monster and a communist. It is coded language for a powerful and successful woman. And a woman of color. A coded racist diatribe. 

 

They just lost most of the remaining women who were in the fence. Good work Don and Mike. You are the best allies the dems could ask for. 

Just Covid alone is good reason to make sure Trump is evicted from office. Pence is another!

So, Boon Mee, how has your President done up against Xi and Putin? I'll give him some marks for his tearing up the trade deals with China, that was a bold and politically dangerous step given how much farm exports were lost as a result. But Putin? He's being called Putin's Puppy for a reason. Hard not to do better than that.

Personally from what I seen of it Pence hardly flew away with it whilst Harris was fairly good swatting him .. 

Madcap theories already range from the Fly being sent by trump to tell Pence what to say through to it was a Russian Fly that got confused ..

Yes EOW, I do remember Golda Meier and she was one tough lady, and one leader whom I admired in the world.

 

Funnily enough, I watched the movie "Munich" again the other night and she is portrayed in it by an actor who gets her character and toughness down to a 'T".

 

I was also living in the UK when Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister and it wasn't for nothing that they call her the "Iron Lady", and for the record, I was friends with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jenny Shipley, and always admired her for her ability to see the big picture, yet also to focus on things that mattered.

 

If Kamala Harris becomes president, I think it will be the best thing that has happened to the USA since Obama.

I think people didn't watch it up to the end but just to see what would happen to the fly.... ????

Honestly, after watching her performance, I can see why she doesn't generally take questions from reporters. She spouted numerous lies and clearly has trouble with being challenged. Also, when leftist's biggest crowing is about how a fly landed on Pence, that's pretty much an admission they know she lost.
