A meatball vendor was killed in a horrifying auto accident in Bangkok’s Suan Luang district on Thursday, with the driver reportedly leaving his BMW and a girl who was with him at the scene before fleeing in van.

Khlong Tan station police were alerted to the accident early in the morning and rushed to the scene with King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital paramedics and rescue volunteers.

They found meatball vendor Udom Saengkanya, 49, dead on the street with a mutilated skull and broken limbs.

They also noticed a woman standing next to the white BMW parked nearby. Officers said she looked confused.

They learned that after the car hit Udom, the driver called for a van to pick him up and fled the scene.

The woman was still in shock and unable to provide the police with any useful information.

The police have collected footage from surveillance cameras and hope to identify the offender.

In 2016 a friend was hit by a BMW in Phuket. Its was not a fatal crash but it in a strange turn of events my friend was liable for the BMW jumping the curb. He broke his leg in 4 places. In court documents sent overseas he was ordered to pay for the damages to the car. Maybe the meatball vendor is guilty too. RIP

it's not about saving face, it's cos they're drunk or high. He'll turn himself in later, when he's sobered up. One thing about getting hit by a wealthy guy is you, or your dependents,  can expect some kind of half decent payment in compensation. You'll get <deleted> all from Somchai from Nakhon nowhere.

Great system, is'nt it! ????????

Sing like a canary darlin'. He left you behind now drop him right in it. He deserves it!

MAYBE..... or maybe he will give her 100 million baht to say he wasn't driving and it was someone else and then she and everyone else is safe..

all depends on how powerful the driver is...

is super powerful, you don't have to flee.....but seems like he's not someone to cross

1 his insurance pays the victim or victims family

2 he gets done for causing death by dangerous driving, leaving the scene of an RTA, etc etc, and properly banged up, fined, banned etc etc.

1.  not if he doesn't have insurance cover

2.  yes ,  he will get done for dangerous driving causing death, same here , same outside. And yes,  probably jail time.

1 if he doesn't have insurance cover he would be even deeper in the mire, but the victim(s) would be entitled to claim from the MIB, at least, in the UK.

2 the point being made was that here, he would quite possibly, or rather, most likely, not be done for anything with the right connections.

In Australia every car owner pays compulsory third party insurance when they pay their yearly registration.  This covers medical bills etc for everyone involved in the event of an accident/crash.

Of course here in Thailand many vehicles are neither registered or insured.  However it is hard to believe a BMW is not registered or insured.  I agree with others that the driver was drunk or high or both and needs time to sober up.  When the driver turns up a blood test should be taken.

Lock up the driver for manslaughter and the van driver for aiding and abetting a criminal.

it would be the same in any other country, if the guilty party has no money you can't get blood out of a stone ....

In my original country they have car insurance, if not the perp goes to jail and there is a fund for the victim to cover costs.

I really wonder from which country you come from, when it is original Thailand, then I can understand what you are saying.

Should treat that behaviour as being automatically guilty and warrant an automatic doubling of his sentence, And once the protesters have done with their current business they might like to turn their attention on whether a person is guilty or not depending on the size of their bank balance or social status.

Very similar to the blood money system we had in Anglo-Saxon England. Take from that what you will.

Anglo Saxon England ended about 1066, that's about 1000 years ago, I didn't realise Thailand was so far behind everyone else, a 100 or so I can believe but not that much surely ????????????

Also drunk driving voids most insurance cover but criminal injury payments are available in some countries.

If the offender has assets then they are vulnerable.

so are you saying he is doing the right thing  ?    he should get double jail time for leaving the scene of an accident.

In Australia and other countries it is a very serious crime to do a runner   .....

Yup, this is likely some Hi So or the son of one. Sobered up, he may appear at a police

station with Mommy or Daddy and lawyer in tow to straighten out the matter.

TIT is a fact, and so is this case and its likely conclusion.  Another day, another crash.

Geezer

Driver is alleged to be HiSo Jimmy, Police Capt. and socialite Akarawin Taechaubol, bit of a celebrity, and from a wealthy family. He did a runner, then turned himself in 12 hours later. Already paid off family.

Police say drug/alcohol tests will take weeks.

Not sure if he was returning from a 4:00 AM dentist apointment? Maybe a whitening treatment? A van following with compatriots whisked him away.
