Which are the most popular hot springs in Chiang Mai province and how to get there?

San Kamphaeng Hot Springs, just follow your nose on the 1318 ( Mahidol Road ) out of the city. Well signposted once you get there.

pretty much the same as other hot springs I have been to... though none are terribly exciting for me..

There are two at San Kamphaeng Hot Springs, we've only been to San Kamphaeng Hot Springs, there is also Sippa hot springs, can't comment on them but San Kamphaeng Hot Springs was reasonable, a swimming pool,  private rooms available, nice gardens, locals seem to like cooking eggs in the hot water as it comes out of the ground,.
There's also hot springs somewhere around Pia, north of Chang mai.

And to the north east on the road to Chiang Rai.

Can't comment on either.

Chae Son (on the edge of Lampang province) looked nice. They even have a Japanese-style onsen. Not a fan of bathing though, so haven't tried.

I didn't like San Kamphaeng either. Nothing interesting there.

Be aware it's probably around a 3 - 3.5 hours drive from Chiang Mai.

 

I haven't been to Sankhampaeng Hot Springs, but a few times to the one in Fang (not too far from our home) and I think it's pretty decent. As a foreigner you might be asked to pay a bit more than Thai people to enter the park. 

 

The scenery is pretty beautiful in my opinion. Clean, well maintained area. There's also a nearby river. People like to eat next to the river with their families. You probably can walk around the national park as well, but I never really did ... just spend time around the hot springs and eating near the river.

Chiang Dao has two, one private with a free part and some Jacuzzi style that are 50bht/pax/hour (not sure if open). That's here !

 

And a national park here.

My lifelong hobby is hotsprings, in many countries, magical water springing from the earth. When I arrived in Thailand 30+ years ago, the Japan Geological Survey and the Dept of Mineral Resources had catalogued and mapped some ~90. I discovered many more, visiting 76 provinces to bring that number to 145 in & my list is now up around ~250. Resorts & hotels have grown up around some.

 

Not all, of course, are suitable for bathing. And I visited decades before the advent of GPS which means my directions are of the "20 paces past the noddle stand, turn left and proceed over fallen tree" variety

 

If there are others interested in making a book of this, I’d like to hear from you.

Thanks. Now I don't regret NOT visiting them. I was going to take the bus from the market, but never managed before leaving LOS for good.

 

North of Chiang Mai where the cave is ( sorry, but I forget the name - Chiang Dao or something like that ) there are hot springs that consist of a few concrete tanks where one can have a soak. No toilets or changing rooms.

If referring to the Chiang Dao Cave area ( that is the correct name ) you absolutely need your own transport. Not worth going just for the hot spring, but Chiang Dao cave is famous and the area is a nature reserve. Some nice temples too. Plenty of resorts for an overnight stay.

The hot springs road is sign posted and not on the same road as the cave, but near it. It's a fair way down a back road.

When I went there was a herd of buffalo to look at while my wife went in the water.

That is like a one and half hour drive from city center. I looked at the photos, and it's not very exciting, just a few tubs of water instead of pool-size.

There is one that a friend discovered the other day somewhere near Mon Jam, Mae Rim that looks absolutely amazing and private. I don't want to post photos with people in them, but I'll try to post the location info when I speak with her.

Mahidol road is actually 1141. After lights at Promenada it becomes route 1317 to San Kamphaeng...

Thanks for this! Now updated. I managed to get the Thai wrong, the transliteration wrong, and even the amphoe wrong! Photos make this look quite developed.

'Fraid I visited these wonders before the invention of such niceties...or even mobile phones! To make my info a book would require a visit to each spring to get the directions right, GPS, and a good photographer.

 

Many Thais have now established resorts near the springs so perhaps our fearless TAT will show some interest.
