BANGKOK (NNT) - Canals in Bangkok were noticeably cleaner on Loi Krathong day last weekend, thanks to Bangkok City Hall’s efforts to clean up and renovate the canal network in the capital. City Hall now aims to dredge and renovate areas along Bang Khen canal, helping improve the scenery and the livelihood of local residents.

Executives of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) have inspected the water quality from Bang Khen canal to Lad Phrao canal, and in Prem Prachakon canal, where the water at some sections of the canal is black and emitting a foul odor, while the water in other areas is in good condition.

To solve this problem, the BMA plans to construct water treatment facilities to collect sewage from households before it is released into the canal, with each of the new facilities supporting 20-30 households. Areas along the canal will also be renovated to improve the scenery. The BMA has also planned a dredging project for Bang Khen canal to improve the flow of water, which is scheduled to take place soon.

The BMA will be communicating with local residents asking them to refrain from littering and discharging wastewater into the canal, to help improve the water quality, as well as negotiating with owners of houses which trespass on the canal area, an issue in which legal intervention may be required should the negotiations fail to yield a resolution.
