BANGKOK (NNT) - To help solve unemployment and economic issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in local communities, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) has launched the One Tambon One University campaign to help create 60,000 jobs in some 3,000 subdistricts across the country.

Mr Anek Laothamatas, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation has officiated in the One Tambon One University campaign, in which a team of 20 university students and members of the public will be assisting each subdistrict in the country, by promoting jobs, community-based tourism, environmental conservation, and strengthening of community enterprises.

The campaign will collect data from communities and store it in a Big Data format for analysis. This will help the campaign find the most suitable resolutions for issues faced by each community, while allowing students to develop their skills. The team will be promoting digital, financial, social, and English skills for villagers, as well as necessary occupational skills.

The campaign is targetting 3,000 subdistricts across the country, with an overall budget of about 10 billion baht. The campaign is expected to create 60,000 jobs, and involve some 80 universities, that will participate in the integration of knowledge and local wisdom, to effectively solve local issues.

Within a year, the One Tambon One University campaign is expected to help 750 capable subdistricts reach a sustainable status, with economic and social strength, as well as self-sufficiency in development. Subdistricts that may not be as capable, expected to be about 1,500, up to half the number of participating subdistricts, will be encouraged to adopt the sufficiency status, before it’s extended to all 7,900 subdistricts across the country.

Ultimately, this campaign is expected to create new employments for more than 150,000 persons.
