I think there is a category missing or the second one is the wrong way round. I believe the insurance is more appropriate to the short term visitor, the largest percentage of defaulters are people on holiday.

Those here on a long term basis should have the option to meet their own expenses.

Spot on!

Obviously those with the assets and the desire to commit to doing so should be allowed to self insure.  But, if those assets are not available insurance would be necessary.  However, individuals should not be forced to be obtain insurance through a select few Thai insurance providers.  Insurance from any reputable and viable insurer should be allowed whether in Thailand or from overseas.

Agree with that 100%, however that makes it impossible to complete the survey as it is.

IMO, there should be a 4th choice of answer

No, people should be allowed to self-insure as long as they can show sufficient liquid assets

There should be another option really to be inline with most if not all other countries;

"Yes, but allow insurance premiums purchased outside of Thailand, not exclusively from Thai companies"

...as long as it's valid inside of Thailand of course!

here's the thing re travel insurance. Around 2012 the govt made it compulsory for all tourists to show proof of travel insurance when entering the kingdom. Unfortunately just another law that has NEVER been enforced.
