Jeffr2
Can't wait for this. But Trump will still be in Florida. Doubt he'll be back after the holidays. It will be the first time in a long time a sitting president didn't attend the inauguration. Horrible leader. https://edition.cnn.com/2020/12/04/opinions/electoral-college-important-dates-before-inauguration-alexander/ Mike Pence is going to put the seal on Donald Trump's defeat

dundas
It's kind of interesting, this debate where people presumably outside the US still argue vehemently as if they'd never left the place. For me, (and OK, I'm not a US citizen), reprehensible as Trump is, the question really is: are the Democrats any better? Obama's selection of his first cabinet was influenced mightily by Citibank, it was a government run for the benefit of corporates, it left out the ordinary people especially the middle class who saw job security become more tenuous and incomes just continue to drop, so no wonder there was fertile ground for a populist like Trump promising to 'drain the swamp.' To answer my own question: the way Trump has attacked institutions in the US (and is continuing to do so even in the twilight of his presidency), the US has come awfully close to something resembling a tin pot fascist state. Trying to force state governors to ignore the will of the people is symbolic of how far he's willing to destroy the things that actually do make America great, just to serve his own ends. I really hope he continues to lose.

Trying to force state governors to ignore the will of the people is symbolic of how far he's willing to destroy the things that actually do make America great, just to serve his own ends. I really hope he continues to lose. Obama faced the worst economy in 75 years and a financial system on the brink of collapse. His first job was to re-establish confidence in the system, the banks, insurers, money markets and the corporate debt market. He did that. He forced banks to recapitalize and slash leverage. He saved insurers and auto companies. The mess he inherited was a result of the 'solution' to a problem that is intractable, which is the obviation of labor in an increasingly technological world. Most jobs that corporate America outsourced went to way stations with the next stop oblivion. Labor has no pricing power. What the US in particular and the world in general tried to do to address labor obviation was to make debt easier to obtain and manufacture a third source of household income, which was home equity. It was doomed to failure, and it happened to blow up in 2007-2008, leading to the Great Recession. Growth was about as good as can be in the 2008-1016 period, and the stock market soared 220%. Jobs were created, but largely service sector, where so far there is no technological solution. Obama passed 45 a soaring equity market, 4.8% UE (down from 10.4%), banks only levered 10:1 vs 40:1 in 2008, and growth of about 2%. $5 came along promising pie-in-the-sky and had a willing audience of people who lack the skills to compete in a modern technological world. It was snake oil, but it resonated because people were scared of being left behind, when in fact nature left them behind. 45 then opened the debt spigot and under him National Debt rose 40% or a new $7,000,000,000,000, yet growth was nowhere near the rise in debt relative to GDP. That's woefully inefficient, and he will leave with UE a deceptive 6.7%, deceptive because a million workers have given up the search for work and no longer count as unemployed. Biden inherits a weak economy, high UE, massive debt and a pandemic....plus the problem of labor's lack of pricing power has not only not gone away, it will only get worse as capital owners seek to minimize the use of human labor. Well, you got that right, IMO. IMO Trump is fortunate to be out of it as the economic problems are going to be vast when the unemployment assistance ends end of the month, unless the senate can come up with something pretty quick. Take a look at the deaths in neighbouring countries. I compared the United States' performance to Canada. It shares a long border with the US and it has a comparably advanced economy with similar resources. America has 8.66 times the population of Canada. So if I multiply the total number of Canadian covid deaths, 12,777 by 8.66 the product is 110, 649. In the USA the current total is 290, 649. That's a mere difference of 180,000. And Canada operates under something of a handicap since the average age of Canadians is 40.9 Whereas the average age of Americans is 37.9 1
